use the "100 degree rule"

if the water temp and air temp don't add up to over 100 you probably shouldn't be sailing.

Or use the temperature snob's rule. If it ain't at least five oh, I won't go.

sailed at the lake yesterday (Saturday ) and left this am on a 4.3 wetsuit water not too bad, was surprised, been there when its felt like snow runoff. Temp was fine, no gloves or booties, used a cap though prob didnt need it.

Max.

PS winds were pretty rad, if you are not in footstraps take up spennies offer and have him give you some tips...see you in the water. be going to lake till june then Rio...

An idea if you got a windsurt wetsuit and put on a vest underneath probably would have been ok...

Don't underestimate the effects of cold air/wind on a body in a wetsuit above the water. While it's true that water conducts heat faster, the wetsuit is designed to have a very thin layer of water around that body that you heat up. How effective a wetsuit is is measured by how little the water moves.

BUT a body out of the water in a wetsuit is NOT protected that well. Neoprene is not a great wind blocker. It just isn't designed to. So you have a person who has wet skin and air moving over it. That cools the body......

A week ago at Tomales most of us were cold while out of the water in the wind, but when we fell in the water, the water actually felt warmer than the air (and the water was probably in the 50's).
