Hi Everyone,

Imagine blasting along on a broad reach racing for the jibe mark, carving a great jibe, flipping the sail and pressing repeat. Downwind slalom will happen at Tierra Verde this Saturday. Warm, windy south winds are forecast for Sat. We are looking to have registration on Sat morn 9:30 to 10:30 with a skipper meeting at 10:30. It should be good solid entertainment for the whole family. No need to worry if you don’t have the latest and greatest race gear, race what you have. Everyone else is.

Raffle prizes are provided by Maui Sails, F2 and Fanatic. $15 dollar registration with cash prizes. No need to worry about retirement on the prizes however. Fun and games will be had by all. We can meet at Sandbar for beers afterwards.

Britt Viehman, Race Director

So the first Tampa Bay Slalom race kicked off with an awesome start, well four starts to be exact.

So how can anyone find fault with warm 15-23 knots of wind, sailing in shorts, slalom racing? No one racing in it could that is for sure. 12 racers looked at the start, jibe mark after jibe mark, blasting on the reaches until the finish. Just grins, well big grins, so let’s press repeat and go again. Everyone had four races. The first jibe mark was full of carnage in the first couple of races and then learning curve kicked in. Greg Rata from St Pete was pulling in bullet after bullet however he was being pressured by various sailors like Jason Myers of Tampa, Tyler Heston, RRD/Sailworks of St Pete, and Jeff Schultz of New York. Bruce Matlack came and was blasting in as well. There were several bets on what was older, his board or him. He hadn’t sailed that board in a slalom race since 1983. At least he had a newer sail. However he was pushing the pack. Alexis Ackman nailed the start in the third race and led the fleet into the first jibe mark, nothing like a hottie blonde being in the lead with a dozen guys chasing her. All in all it was a great day, intense racing, awesome building conditions. Not too shabby since it was the first slalom race since I can remember in this area. Everyone was saying lets play more in the future, so GAME ON!!!
