Hey, what happened to the line and floats marking the designated swim area at Kanaha Beack Park? I understand that some of the wonderful folks at the shops kept it up ...IT NEEDS TO GO BACK UP, please !?
The kids, tourists, and local folks need and have the right to have a safe place to swim without people launching, sailing, and doing freestyle tricks, right near them! The swim area has one poorly placed sign that tourists don't see, however ... IT IS A DESIGNATED NO SAILING , NO GEAR ZONE and as for you local sailiors ... quit launching and sailing there! You got the whole rest of da beach! ... see someone windsurfing there? inform them.
And FYI, there is a bill in the legislature right now, (that most likely will pass), stating windsurfiers and kiters MUST stay 200 ft. from swimmers! So all of you folks that love to sail and kite all our local areas, give swimmers the room, safety, and respect they deserve ... or there could be some unwelcome changes! A second lifeguard tower is planned on the upper point at Kanaha. The whole area between the towers could become a swim zone, and sailors would lose big time! Spread the word! Respect all swimmers! anyone at the shops listening, please help ? MAHALOS |

Hi Lopakamaui,
Not that I disagree with with you regarding your post and its intent, from what I recollect (I haven't been to Maui since 1997), Baldwin Beach Park is off limits to any windsurfing inside the outside reef. Also, at least from my past experience, is a very nice place for swimming and other family activities.
Of course, I'm sure that windsurfing and kiting families might have members that may not participate in these wind sports, but would still like to safely enjoy the water at Kanaha Beach Park. Still, I would hope that the swimming area would be modest in size, particularly considering the no windsurfing or kiting rule before 11:00 AM. |

Hi Lopaka,
The buoys have been temporarily removed for maintenance. They will be replaced soon. That is still the designated swim zone, so please help spread the word until the repair work is done and the buoys are put back in!!
Thanks |
