Hi,
Just wondered if any members have surfed in Belize? Interested in your two cents for ....
1) Getting there. (I would be traveling from Washington, DC)
2) Best time for wind and conditions to expect
3) Best places to stay and from which to rent gear
4) Any other advice you have.

Thank you
Peter Very Happy

We went to Belize in January two years ago - had a great time.

Getting there:
- We flew Continental direct from Houston.
- I believe there may be direct flights from D.C. - not sure what airline.

Time of year:
- Jan is a little dicey. We had some rainy days. I think their weather is better in Feb - March.

Where to go:
- Ambergris Caye is the main tourist/beachy/windsurf place. You have to take a short puddle-jumper flight (about 15 min) from Belize City. We stayed at Victoria House - very nice. Lots of good places there though.

Windsurfing:
- Rented gear from Chris at Sailsports (www.sailsportsbelize.com).
- Sailing is pretty good inside the reef (about 1/2 mile from shore) - though there is a fair amount of boat traffic.
- Outside the reef is swell, but a bit of a chore to get out there

Other stuff:
- There is lots of other interesting stuff to do in Belize. The Mayan ruins are really cool (there's one that's doable as a daytrip from Ambergris).
- If you have time, go stay a few days in the jungle near the Guatamala border. We went on a canoe trip through a cave - very cool.
- They have a nice little zoo not too far from the airport.
- The Belikin beer is really good (one benefit of being a former British colony)

I live in Belize in on the island of Caye Caulker which is the main windsurfing place in the country. The wind often blows 5 knts more here than Ambergris which is a few miles North. Conditions up there offer less range along with less wind. The only reason to sail there is Chris at Sailsports. His rental operation is good and he makes fine chocolate completely from local cocoa beans. The price of food, hotels, diving, everything but gear is roughly double the same thing on Caye Caulker. Most resident sailors live here for better sailing and much less tourism.
There is little boat traffic here and you can sail completely around the island or to other islands from here. Bump amd jump in protected water out front, flatwater blasting near the reef or big waves that are much easier to reach than Ambergris. Our best wave site is two miles of one long reef break -usually empty.
