I have had my 2004 Prius for over 4 years, 55K miles now and love it. As a surfboard distributor I transport boards daily and people laugh when they see me drive around with up to fifteen 11 foot plus Stand Up Paddle boards on the roof rack. I have Thule racks and had no problems even though I go way past what is recommended or probably legal. A few windsurf boards are no problem, I go up to 70 mph to the North Shore. Good straps are essential. With the front seat down I can even stack several 10'6" longboards inside the car and still fit a passenger behind the driver seat. I get 45 to 48 mpg with the rack and don't drive like an old lady either- it's fun to drive. I have never had a better car and I have had all kinds of transportation before my Prius. I figure I save about $2000 a year on gas (and several tons of CO2 emissions) compared to the mini van I had before. I guess this is starting to sound like a commercial for Toyota. Seriously, I think everyone should have a Hybrid and I can't wait to get a plug in version. I'll post a picture with the Prius loaded with boards on our website:

My Prius is ready to deliver surfboards all over the island. Even with this load it still gets better milage than a comparable non hybrid car- gotta love it.

Dude, I'm sorry but that looks like a bad accident waiting to happen.
Only one strap away from from creating a potentially lethel disaster for the poor cars behind you. I hope your liability insurance can handle it, not to mention your conscience.

As a motorcycle rider I make it a point not to follow over loaded vehicles such as this, or pickup trucks with mattresses in the back. Cool

I think that photo is hilarious -- I'd suggest sending it to Toyota USA, they might use it in an ad somewhere...LOL.

BUT: What happened to drivin' island-style, brah? I could see driving that fully-loaded cargo ship, but I'd cruise like a grandma/pa at about 30MPH max...

Yes, I would not go fast or anywhere close to a highway with a load like that. I take big loads like this to Young Brothers to ship to the neighbor islands, it's only a couple of blocks from the warehouse. I posted this picture for entertainment value only, please don't try this at home! That said, going fast with a couple of boards on the roof that are strapped down well is not a problem at all. Most cases I heard of gear flying off the roof are caused by slipping buckles, bad tie downs, failing bungee cords or just plain forgetting to strap the stuff down, not due to the rack failing (if it is properly attached).
I think the Thule racks are rated for a 70 lb load, so this is way beyond what it was made for and I'm not encouraging you to try it. Anyway, the relatively low roof of the Prius makes loading the roof easy. Putting boards on my wife's van is a pain in comparison and on regular pickup trucks the bed is too short for longer boards to be balanced.
By the way, the difference between driving with empty roof racks and no roof racks is less than 2 mpg. I though it would be more but I tested it and for the driving I do it made less of a difference than low tire pressure.

If you are thinking about getting a Prius, I highly recommend the smart key entry system- you can unlock and start up the car without taking the keys out of your pocket. Also, somebody said the sound sucks. I got the 9 speaker JBL speaker sound system and it rocks, so this is probably a good investment, too. I heard Toyota is working on a plug in version, so that may be worth waiting for.
Yes, I do love my Prius.

My loaded Prius:

3 boards: Two wave, one slalom.
4 or 5 sails.
3 masts.
2 booms.

50mpg with CC set to 68mph.

As born2surf points out I can get a 10' SOS big green INSIDE my prius along with wave gear which means I'm skunk proof!

Mike

I guess your wife doesn't go with you...eh Mike? Cool

Or do you strap her on the roof? Laughing

It looks real pretty where you live, where is that?

The Prius is indeed a SOV when loaded for sailing. I have however on occasion taken my son with me. The 60/40 rear seat split allows for gear on the 60% side and a passenger sitting behind the driver. Not ideal but it works in a pinch.

My place is in Santa Barbara. I do get down south on occasion to sail Leo so If you see a guy pulling gear out of a silver Prius remember to say hello!

I have a Prius with smart key. When I go windsurfing, what do I do with the key (because I can't get it wet)? Do I have to remove the battery, store it in the car, and take a key with me around my neck? There must be an easy way to deal with this. Can anyone help me please?
