In order from easiest to hardest (In my Opinion):
Los Alamitos Harbor- flat water, offshore sub planing wind
Cabrillo Beach (inside)- flat water, tons of wind
Belmont Shore- choppy water, no waves
Seal Beach- Chop, Swell, no waves at the launch, waves in the SG River
Cabrillo Beach (outside)- swell, chop, usually small waves, windiest spot in SoCal.
Sunset Beach, Bolsa Chica & Huntington- onshore wavesailing, can get knarly when the swell is big. Huntington is less windy and sailable less often.
Lake Isabella- near Bakersfield, flat water-small swells, tons of wind, 4.0 and up!!!
Spring is the windiest, and in the fall it settles down unless we get a good storm.
GOOD LUCK!! |

I fully concur. 048 knows his stuff. I've spent many years in the area and have windsurfed at all of the mentioned spots. I'd probably follow the progression just as he listed it. Huntington Beach itself may be a place you don't hit very often as a windsurfer, but it can happen, rarely, and will be more of the advanced wavesailor type of experience.
Another tool to find these spots would be the region's Dynamic Map here on iWindsurf:
http://www.iwindsurf.com/windandwhere.iws?regionID=209&Isection=Gmap+Obs
All the streets are included. All the windspeeds are listed. Just zoom in cruise around. Click the "HYBRID" button to add in the satellite map, which is darn cool.

Tell me more about lake Isabella.
Can you sail it year round?
Were do the windsurfers camp and launch from?
Are there any facilities?
Thanks,
Matt |
it always blows, unless it's too hot >90deg. Spring is the best, expecially june gloom. Windsurfers camp and leave everything rigged at The Ghetto (see thewindmap.com). There are restrooms, and that's about it.
Kern River is right there, with tons of whitewater kayaking, rafting, and riverboarding in the spring. |

Hi bro, yep HB can get good , start with the sequence advised- that's what all us local guys did back in the 80 and early 90s. If you need gear cheap call me, I rarely have time to sail anymore so all this stuff is collecting dust in my garage which is a sad fate:

The best wind is usually from the west, at least for Cabrillo, during the late spring and summer months. Much of the engine for this is the low clouds and fog present at these times. The wind is also compressed and accelerated by the PV Peninsula. I would recommend watching the sensors on iWindsurf over the long haul to better understand the pattern and timing. |

Just FYI, Cabrillo beach (inside) has gotten an "F" in water quality measurements the past few years, and Belmont Shore and Seal Beach have hovered at grades "D" and "C" at best.
Hope all your shots are current and that you have an awesome immune system!
If you want to taste and feel clean ocean water, you'll have to go North, just past Zuma, and start from there. |
