i am considering spending november at spi for windsurfing, but i heard the fall season is over then (people have gone to la ventana). my biggest sail is a 6.3, but i'd buy larger for this trip.

I wouldn't say there's really been a fall season this year--it's been an off year with much less wind than usual. Fall isn't really the "in season" in TX in any case....but sometimes there are some good stretches in November, and hopefully that will happen this year. You don't mention your size or sailing style so it's hard to say what sail size is best, but if your main goal is to plane you may want a bigger sail. If you sail in the Gulf you wouldn't want to go that big. Enjoy the trip!

SPI's prime fall season is around 10/15-11/30. Early Oct. tends to be more like the summer. From mid Oct through mid Nov, usually there are 10-15 sailable days during which you can plane on anything from a 4.0 to 7.0.

sounds good. i'm 200 lbs and an experienced gorge sailer (19 years), but had a stroke 1.5 years ago and need some time on the water.

SPI would be a good place to get re-aclimated. The water is very flat in the Laguna Madre bay - even when the wind is up. And you can touch bottom just about everywhere (although the bottom is kind of mucky with small sharp oyster shells - wear booties!).
I've been to SPI the last two Novembers and have had pretty good luck. Usually manage to hit one of their "northers" where the wind can really blow - I've been out on a 3.5m sail. Then the wind can die for a couple of days before the more gentle southerly breezes kick in again. Typical sail sizes for southerlies is 5.5m to 7.5m.

By the way - SPI is going off today in a big way.
Looks like a big "norther" is coming through.
The wind graph is showing an average windspeed of 42MPH!
