What makes wind? Burritos, beer, brocoli, political discussions[see "Political Rant" thread for a serious blow]. I'll now turn this one over to my wind prognosticator Mitch to give you the low down on barometric pressure variables, temperature variance, cut- off lows, and Pacific highs... However, if you wish to experience real wind this winter, come up to Mammoth, it blows on top almost every day! And we're talking cold, nasty, 50+ mph blasters that give you incentive to drop into Climax or Scotty's [read STEEP] to get out of it! Bull

A lot of things cause wind. You could probably gets some answers if you googled "wind climatology" or you could get a book about weather from a bookstore or library. I doubt if you will become a better wind forecaster than any of the many forecasts available on the web.

Wind is caused by temperature differences.
Wind blows downhill in the atmosphere. That is- from highs toward lows.
Those lines you see on an isobar chart are windy if they are close together. Right Mike?
You tell wind at youir site from long years of looking at the sky, smelling the air. and comparing what you see with windy days in the past. You can get there quicker by asking guys like fisherman and boat sailors or even kiters to add to your pool of experience.

Whoohoo, only 3 weeks to opening day. Pray for a better season than last year.

while the usual answer is temperature and pressure differences, we all actually know different. It is actually dependent on a karma system-if you slog around all afternoon you are owed one good day from the windsurf god (usually known as Robbius). If you complain about the slogging you may reverse the day you'd otherwise recieve. Never ever complain about bad windsurfing or you may incur the wrath and have the switch suddenly turned off while out sailing and have to swim in> sometimes robbius pays off instead with a really good powder day.
