Sailed in Tiana bay off a friends house last week in aboub 12 to 14 winds. No other boats or sailors for miles around! Found it a great protected site with a possible public launch area on the west end of Tiana bay. Also drove over the bridge to ocean and noticed that Shinnecock bay is big, open and shallow. Have never seen any windsurfers out there and wonder why and know there is a flag for this on the map on this site. I only get to Hamptons about 2 or 3 times a year, live in westchester but am wondering if any of you sail on Shinnecock especially inside and west of the inlet? Or if anyone ever has in the past. 300px250px40.86543224021908,-72.53714561462402140Normal40.86296564025515,-72.53439903259277 launch area [/img]
|

People sail Shinnecock at a number of locations, but it's rarely if ever the first choice for any given wind direction. Also note: In the summer there's a fair amount of boat traffic.
If your heart is set on Shinnecock/Tiana, check out the Tiana launch from the barrier beach side of the bay, immediately opposite the beach station for Tiana. ABK and Dasher used to hold clinics at this spot because of the excellent shallow waters available and the variety of winds that worked there. (Clinics are held at Napeague these days, btw).
Other spots that are good to sail in the general vicinity include Mecox Bay (for anything southerly try the "Yacht Club" launch...note that this is just a name...there is no yacht club!) if you like shallow water, and any number of spots on the Peconic Bays if you want bump and jump.
Here's a map of windsurfing locations in the area:

If you know you're coming out to the east end of LI to windsurf, post a message here in advance, and or in the Yahoo Long Island Windsurfing Group and The Peconic Puffin (the site with the map), and see who else might be sailing in the area.

Thanks for the reply. Will definitely check out the launch by the beach across the bay. Looks like there is really good sailing on Peconic too, lots of spots on your map! Surprised i haven't heard much about these as Napeague is always talked about. Great map you have too.
