Brian, that's excellent stuff. I've decided to start a new topic, because, really, this isn't about windsurfing in Mexico any more, is it? (Maybe it is, in a way)

I'm going to take the liberty of cutting and pasting your previous message, so we can discuss the political situation under the right heading.

I am of like mind with capetonian and nealpar. We have no leaders that exhibit or the cajones to actually lead. Most of the problems this country is having, and is on a collision course with, are due to so few of our elected officials looking past the next election cycle (Yes, nealpar's "vision" ), and being willing to make statements that will make people uncomfortable. I mean they've got to be smart enough to see what so many of us are seeing. Aren't they?

Remember Warren Buffett getting press while he was advising Arnold, for mentioning that we might have to pay a bit more in taxes in order to cure systemic budget problems? Even the world's most successful investor, who has made billions from the system, was quickly "escorted" from the frontline of Arnold advisers. "For God's sake Warren, don't make Californians unfcomfortable for second. What are you trying to do?!" Isn't it at least worthy of discussion?

In the eighties I was ranting about the illegal immigration issues that are now in the fore. Wasn't that sort of obvious? Of course it was, but nobody wanted to eliminate the cheaper labor pool and people to buy their used stuff so that they could buy more new stuff. My family has been going nuts about how much money we send to China for 20 years. It's become impossible to live without sending your fair share to our Sino creditors. The writing has been on the walls, and it's been in English.

The real estate finance situation was an absolute no-brainer if you just took a minute to think about the types of loans that were being made. Nealpar and I had a few conversations about the "when", not "if", of that sh-t hitting the fan. Here we are. The same things happened in the eighties before the S&L meltdown. There were very few voices ( 80's Texas Representative Henry Gonzales was one.) warning about the types of things that were going on back then. There were some, but they were branded as kooks, and negative thinkers. You know the drill. Don't ever be the first one to mention the elephant in the room. If you do, you'll be forever the kook. They'll forget your warning once they all start trying to avoid being crushed.

The way Greenspan is going around trying to rewrite his history, and distance himself from our problems, you'd swear that he thought worse times were ahead. As I said on another MB, at 81, Greenspan should be thinking about a Teflon grave marker, one that the spit is easier to clean off. Time will tell.

Leaders don't want to lead. Americans don't seem to use their heads and ask for more from their leaders. Just tell us what the survey tells you that we want to hear. Just win baby. Everything is hunky-dory. It seems like we're in a stupidity loop.

I have some culpability here myself, as all I've wanted to do was go windsurfing, knowing how screwed up things are getting. Despite the fact that there are many worse than me, I am so f--ing spoiled. I sort of suck too ( I don't need any posted agreements to this) .

When comparing American republic to Rome at the time of the Caesars, Rep. Gonzalez said, " The Caesars weren't tyrannical. They were guys who wanted to be loved, like the president. But they exercised power unrestrained by a constitution, just like the president" (Bush Sr. at the time of the book's publication)

He goes on, "We have so traduced democracy, cut off the participatory side, that the people don't see any point. I find that the people can see through things. The people are there. But what can they do? When they have no choice between the two parties, no real choice between the overwhelming preponderance of the candidates." (Taken from "Who Will Tell the People-The betrayal of American democracy", by William Greider c.1992)

Bottom line: We don't allow leaders to get into a position to lead, because they may have somehow made us uncomfortable by speaking the truth. Who's fault is that?

Perhaps we should all take the opportunity in the off season to try and make a difference?

Have any of you heard of the World Bank? It is a profitable institution that makes loans to third-world and developing countries. They are first and foremost in business to make money, not for charity.

They only look at ONE statistic when they decide whether to loan money or not---they look to see if the women in that particular country have access to education.

Because if the women are educated, they will work. If they work, they will limit the amount of children they have. If they limit the amount of children they have, they will pull themselves and their family out of disease and poverty.

So, if you get as frustrated as I do with the poverty in the world, and you can do one thing, support Planned Parenthood.

All the problems in the world---global warming, poverty, disease, famine---are from overpopulation. 95% of the wild animal population of India---tigers, elephants, lions--- has been eliminated because of ONE BILLION people.

Procreation is a privilege, not a right.

Go Hillary!

Rowena honey you are missing something. The fastest growing segment of the population is hispanic and they are all catholics who believe that birth control is a sin. What are you gonna do about that?

...nothin you can do. Natural Selection rules. Those who can adapt will survive. Those who can't won't.

JPBassking,

Women aren't stupid. If you make birth control available to them, even Catholic women, they'll move mountains to get it. Educated women want fewer babies!

windoggie, I'm surprised. You're from Bazurkley, you should sound more educated than that. "Natural Selection" and Darwinism would imply that we have predators. We don't. Humans are the only animal on the planet whose numbers can only be controlled by killing each other... Or voluntarily limiting our numbers.

I, for one, think that using our brains to limit our numbers, rather than following your _____s and creating more people, is probably more humane.

Speaking of natural selection, those coyotes roaming around my backyard have seemed hungrier lately.

Shocked

Natural selection. Ahhh, yes. I was a bio major, but don't need to be one to figure out what happens when something "outproliferates" another.....The mass-producing species reaches a critical mass when it is able to alter the environment to its favor, and unfavorable to a different species, so the latter is driven to a new location or to extinction?

JPBassking, not only did I not throw rocks at russian tanks.......I have a picture of myself, at age 5, sitting in the lap of a Russian soldier, who just gave me a chocolate bar and a pretty Red Star pin, with a big smile on my face...... I still like men in uniform. MKrasnoff, what will you wear for Halloween?

Just want to add one more thought on the US's immigration policy, and what someone mentioned about people "still clamoring" to get into the U.S.

Instead of letting in the 75 yr. old grandmother or uneducated brother and his pregnant wife of ....xyz, who somehow gained legal status here a few years ago, and is now "sponsoring" his whole extended family....., who'll be working under the table 'cause they don't speak English.............. we should be relaxing the immigration policy on scientists, engineers, physicians, etc..., who'll maybe take this country forward a little.....

As for clamoring to come here....not people from Europe. Ask anybody. They might come here for a few years, but are happy to return. The ones that may still want to come here are from 3d world countries only!!! Mostly poor and uneducated. That's primarily how this country has been expanding in its immigration population.

Melting pot shmelting pot.

I can't believe how things fit sometimes. It's my expectation that I will published by the LA Times probably tomorrow for a letter I wrote the other day. Of all things, it was regarding a recent Greenspan comment, as later leveraged by Jonah Goldberg in a commentary the other day titled, "Bashing Bush With Greenspan".

Of course, the LA Times could elect not to run it, but on every occasion that they called me, the letter ran. Needless to say, at times they taylored my comments to fit their editorial outlook and viewpoint on opinion, so they could do so here. Yet overall, my comments should be interesting even with any an potential modifications.

Check it out.

So, true, Nealpar, about our immigration policy.

America was so enriched in the 40s and 50s, by immigrants fleeing Hitler's Germany and Communist countries. Those were scientists, doctors, lawyers---Freud, Werner Von Braun (also Oppenheimer, inventor of the Atomic Bomb), BRILLIANT, educated men and women, many Jewish, of course, who added so much to the overall intelligence of our populace.

Since the 60s, however, the immigrants are overwhelmingly from third world countries, with no skills whatsoever!

As far as Darwinism, think about the type of person who flees Mexico and struggles to come to the United States for a new life. More aggressive genetically? Is this an example of Survival of the Fittest? Our only hope is that they will have fewer children, and many immigrants do within ONE generation, which is promising.

I was in Switzerland this summer. I heard that many Britons would like to leave England, but as for Europeans coming here? No way! The quality of life as far as organic food, toxins outlawed, a reliance upon natural remedies instead of pharmaceuticals for EVERY ailment. Europe is a far HEALTHIER place to live.
