'Sbeen blowing like crazy all day Friday, and the parking lot looks fairly full on the cam, but there's been almost no one on the water ... only 6-8 people at a time.
Is it that gusty?
Did someone see a shark?
North wind?
Toxic waste spill?
I care because it's a 150-mile drive for me -- fine for decent conditions but not for crap4wind.

The chop beginning late AM answers my question; that's about the time I began checking the cam. What caused the chop to replace the swell? I don't see a wind direction shift or a significant change in wind quality to cause it.
As for a "decision" ... never even considered driving in to the corridor today, due to continued multiple-source forecasts of 20-30 out east, much closer to home. Uh, yeah ... almost hit double digits once.
SUCK-KER!

Long time ago, I scratched my head over stuff like this. Then I noticed lots of other windsurfers going bald... so I stopped scratching my head.
To tell you honestly.... I dunno. Maybe the wind gods don't like mobs? |

River flow has a lot to do with the quality of the swell on the river. However, the number of sailors has a lot to do with the psycho chop as well. Each windsurfer puts out a significant wake - just sail behind and upwind/downwind of a friend, and you'll hit their wake and understand. If you put a bunch of windsurfers on the river, it's the equivalent of putting a bunch of powerboats out on a glassy day. The more wakes, the more cross-chop you get.
That's why the early, not-crowded session tends to be better.

Was a great day today - finally got my 3.2m sail wet.
I have a theory that the swells are best when the wind speed is changing. Seems like when theres a lull for a few minutes, and then the wind cranks backup - that is when the big swells appear. After a while of steady wind speed the swells get more chaotic. Just a theory.

Having sailed there a few hundred days, I tend to agree. But when it hogs all the wind and the turristas have gone home, it'll do.
