Just got home from an 8day Sugar Cove stint and Im tring to re-enter reality, which is tough. The wind was off the charts all week and the 4-8ft conditons were spectacular at Sprecks and upwind in front of Paani Pt. I know a lot of you big hitters used to do Maui everyyear , but dont go anymore.
I think it should be mandatory that all West Coast windlovers hit Maui once a year just to get a taste of the best windsufing on the planet. Im closing my eyes and pretending to still be there , not sitting at my desk with a tie on.

And if you want to re-live it a little more, there's some fresh photos and video of the action at Hookipa on Friday at MauiWindsurfing.net.

Hey jeff thanks for the link. The sets at Sprecks and Paani Pt. were solid head high all day. |

Boggsman, don't be surprised if you get arrested by the California "DWAC" (Dept. of Windjunkie Animal Control) for exercising "undue cruelty" upon us. |

Hey all,
I'm planning a trip to Maui in the next few weeks and would really apreciate a few tips.
1. Where to stay? I would like to stay closer to the sailing spot, so from that prospective what would you recommend, North or South Shore? I'd rate myself somewhere between beginner and intermediate sailor. The biggest swell I've experienced was 4-5ft in Berkeley (July 16th this year). Apart from being overpowered, I quite liked it.
2. Where to rent gear? I plan to rent a van, so distance to the spot shouldn't be an issue. I would also be interested in shops that have gear/instruction packages.
3. Wetsuit. Which one would I need, if any at the end of October, beginning of November? I do prefer longer sessions and not bothered by extra insulation.
Thank you. |

Heres my two cents. October is a good wave month. Dont compare Berkeley rollers with Maui, because in October, there will be legit head high waves breaking at Kanaha, and Sprecks. I like to rent at Kanaha Kai, good gear, HOT SAIL/Real Wind boards.
Being an beginner/intermediate I would sail at Kanaha , and maybe Kihei, to lessen the wave factor, although Kanaha will have good size waves.
If youre on a budget, you can stay at a condo in Kihei, and drive to either Kanaha or to the beach at Kihei. If youre not, I would stay off Stable road and sail Camp One , down to Kanaha.

oh yeah . wetsuit, all you need , if any , is a shorty, but probaly not. |

Thanks for great advice. I only used Berkeley as an example of my newbiness, no comparisson with Maui. If I stay off the Stable Rd. would I still need a car? |

Here's a shot from Sugar Cove looking down to Sprecks taken last October 26th.

Also wanted to ask, how bad is the airport noise if staying off Stable road?
Thanks.
Mo,
Great picture. Maybe on day 5 |
