Qman, don't be spooked by a couple of close calls. It comes with the territory.

If I got intimidated by soft bellied men in their 50's, needing a motrin loaded blood transfusion after a few hours of sailing, who act like immature f'n spoiled little children, I'd have no respect for myself.

Oestman, you can stick a sail onto a telephone pole and ride that for all I care. You are missing the point.

Drop in and die? If that were true, there wouldn't be one local surfer still living in santa cruz.

For what it is worth, I sailed at Arroyo Laguna (slightly south of the launch below the rocks, where the south swell is larger) on Saturday and Sunday before joining the crowd at Leo on Monday. Apart from small waves on both days (about the same size as Leo on Monday, but less wait between sets), I had a lot of fun at Arroyo Laguna because there were virtually no crowds. Every wave I wanted was empty and mine for the taking.

I have sailed Arroyo Laguna 4 times this year, and it has delivered every time.

IF YOU CAN MAKE IT A LONG WEEKEND - CONSIDER A ROAD TRIP!!!!

On surf protocol/etiquette, from Surfline.com

1 Pick the right spots for your ability and attitude.
2 Don't drop in on or snake your fellow surfer.
3 When paddling out, stay out of the way of riders on waves.
4 Learn to take turns.
5 Respect the vibe in the line-up.
6 Always aid another surfer in trouble.
7 When travelling, respect the local surfers.
8 Don't use your surfing advantages to abuse your fellow surfers.
9 Be responsible for your equipment and respectful of others'.
10 Relax, have fun, and enjoy your surfing and that of your fellow surfer.

How do we grade ourselves on all ten?

I give myself a solid 10. Perhaps it's a dubious distinction? Perhaps I'm being too generous to myself? What is the "vibe" in our line-up today? We can't control the intervals between sets, but we create the vibe. How many of us our happy to see one of our buddies catching a great wave? How many angrily covet their position? Answer the questions to yourselves, should you fell so-compelled. I think that 50% of us probably score 100% on this. Are you in that 50%? Are you happy not to be? This will be graded on a curve so at this point it can go either way. Methinks we're perched on the precipice.
Shocked

Thanks for the tip, capetonian. I'll look into that one.

Windsurfing Surf Rules:

Upwind Sailor on the wave has the right of way. (This does not mean that hopping over the shoulder gives taht rider the way, last on the wave must yield.)

Don't adjust your equipment in the line up or impact zone.

Look in all directions, Yes helmet and ear phones means pay extra attention to your suroundings.

Don't park and drool in the line up. (Bard!)

Don' Expect that all waves are yours! Share as different riders have different styles.

If your are down wind on the same wave you must give way to the upwind sailor.

It does not matter if you kite or sail. If you want respect earn it on the water not on the internet.

Aloha Gregor.
