Purple,

Perhaps you can explain a little more about how often the mycrocystis algae variety produces these noxious toxins. Is this an automatic result or one that occurs occasionally?

I'm also curious about where exactly you took the measurements that had the high readings in Antioch. Was it in the middle of the river or an area near the shore that may not get much flow? Did your sample contain 100% mycrocysitis or was that a small part of the algae sample?

Yo Riders!

Tricky Ricky here, I sailed "the sign" today, Friday mid day for a slog-sesh. Of course I pay attention to all the indicator sites for wind (4-5 of them). I did not see a banner day of sailing, but I did have fun! I hope the wind kicks up- a notch. Look at the observations at your "sites"- YOU MAY FIND AN AWESOME SESH!

There were others sailing (and kiting) today also.

It may be a good idea to review some links to this situation to make your own call.

I WILL still be sailing.

Is it a great holiday weekend to bring the family for water-play, maybe not.

This appears to be long-term situation, more that a day or two , week ,more ? - but overall do any Delta sailors have a complaints-

WHAT A SWEET SEASON!!!!

I appreciate Ted Sommers bring this to everyone's attention and his honesty in his many replies. It might be interesting for someone in the public health arena to compare this current algal threat with the junk coming out of all the storm drains, ag drains, sewage treatment plants that aren't working right, etc. And of course, public policy must be based on sound science, not newspaper reports about how people get sinus infections after a long day in the water (however valid that may be).

So the bigger picture is that no matter where we sail, we face threats, both natural and manmade and to the extent that our government is not out looking (monitoring) we will never know about them. In other words we'll have our head in the sand. All sailors should be tossing a few bucks toward a clean water group and pushing SFBA to make this part of the WS Agenda.

Dr. Ted and Dr. Peggy,
I have sailed 39 days this season at Rio starting in March and as late as last weekend. I have a minor rash (in spots) on both legs from mid thigh down to above my ankles. It is really more of an itch than a rash. I have been experiencing this for more than a month. A fellow windsurfer who is a doctor prescribed some cortisone crème, which stops the itching and clears up the rash (which looks like dried skin) however the itching comes right back. What to do??? I have no other symptoms. Question

Yes, it was a great season-both at the coast this spring starting in March and all summer long at the Delta. The good news is there are lots of other salt water options for this fall, winter and spring. Hopefully, we will get more info and the situation will prove itself to be an anomaly by the prime time season next year at the Delta. Perhaps we should use this as a wake up call to demand better monitoring and desemination of info from our governments. We all love the place, care about it and want to be able to enjoy it for many years to come. Tom

It's a dirty, smelly, toxic god-forsaken mudhole. Twisted Evil

But, the morning sessions the past two days were pretty fun, I must say! Laughing

I am wondering if us beer drinkers are at an even higher level of risk from the SI green slime given that it can cause liver damage.

Yes, it may be a mudhole, but it is your/our mudhole, isn't it? Smile

Me ? I wouldn't get into delta water at gunpoint. The last time I sailed at Sherman Island, I felt like my skin had a coating on it when I dried off, and that was twenty years ago. Think about it. The Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers run through a couple hundred miles of farmland. There's probably equal parts pesticide, cow piss, and water by the time they hit the bay. Good luck.

Above: "It's a dirty, smelly, toxic god-forsaken mudhole". 'But it's blowin 20 on an ebb! I've always said for the most part windsurfers only care about wind, the rest is workable. What a sport, huh?
