Kevinkan,
Would you be willing to share your TI launch access tips? I had thought TI was a write-off this year altogether.
Thanks,

I used to attend Naval Reserve meetings at Treasure Island back in the early 80's. It would be fun to windsurf there some day. |

Last time Kevin and I sailed off TI was on a weekend day with a nice ebb, less than a month ago. The place realy looks sketchy during the weekends and after de-rigging we saw this guy jumping over a fence next to our vans so we were thinking that it wouldn't hurt to post something here and ask more people to sail TI so that we feel a bit safer.
To get to the launch we're using this year just drive as if you were going to the parking lot by the boat ramp but instead of going all the way, make a right on 13th St? towards the water. You can rig/de-rig in the patch of green grass and walk your gear a few yards to the riprap or you can do it in the dirt right next to the water.
I haven't tried on weekdays or when it's flooding since this launch is a bit downwind from the original launch site and too close to the Bay Bridge to try your luck. Funny thing is that you just have to throw your gear into the water and jump behind, then wait for the ebb to take you upwind to the windline or swim upwind, either way it won't take you more than 3 minutes to get to the windline with a good ebb. It was fun watching Kevin sitting on his board while the ebb was quickly taking him upwind. I decided to swim, probably the fastest swim I ever did.
Oh yeah, and TI winds and swell still rocks although I've only sailed there twice this season. |

TI is great, but if it were me, it sounds like just too much work if I'm here for just a weekend without a local guide and rented equipment. Kinda like those powder stashes at ski area that only locals know. The wind can hang on around SFO until early Sept., but I'd just plan on doing a hike in the headlands and catching some great views. Sept. brings some of the best weather of the year to SF.
Does it look like TI is a lock to be available for next year?
