Just moved south from SF Bay and looking for windsurf winds. I heard Leo is good - can sail most every day, but a historical data search for the sensor through June/July show maybe 1 in 5 days with winds over 15 for a couple hours. Please say it ain't so...

Been spoiled with daily 20 on the SF bay - the rumor was Leo offered daily 16-20 range, but I'm not seeing it. What am I missing (aside from a much bigger sail!)?

You're confusing Leo Carillo and Cabrillo. Cabrillo picks up an afternoon thermal almost every day. If you show up at 3:00 from June to September and rig your 6.0-6-5 (or 8.0 to 9.0 for the racer-types), you will almost always get at least 3 hours of sailing before sunset.

Leo has much less reliable wind, but gets some great waves.

Welcome in SOCAL.

Cabrillo Beach is the top wind spot, 15 to 25 most of the days, westwind storm in spring and fall can be epic, 10 to 15 times.
Leo is great when waves roll in and wind is there,
Topanga for a quick late afternoon wave session.
Belmont and Long beach is in the 12 to 17,
Jalama rocks for waves.

The wind seems really bad right now........marine layer till late everyday. It seems like this summer hasn't been too good so far. We had an epic spring windsurf season (consistent wind started in February)

Cabrillo is the most consistent

Huntington is the best in my opinion; big waves, lots of chop, lots of swell, lots of wind (sometimes), and cool lifeguards.

Lake Isabella is awesome too! gusty winds 15-30 flat water or swell on the far end, camping on the water, lots of no wind activites on the river and in the mountains (see www.kernriverboards.com its a new extreme sport gaining popularity in the southern sierras)

Melpel,

What you heard about Leo may have been about last summer when the place went off for what seems like weeks at a time (15-25 low 5 to 5.8 size sails at those speeds. Check data from last July/August to verify. Also, Leo is usually only good in July and August when the valley heats up.

This has been a bad wind summer in SoCal which has killed Leo and hurt Cabrillo. Good days at Cabrillo bring avgs. of 18, w/wind ranges from 14-24 WSW w/ a few pops to 25-27 range. This summer it's been more like 16 avg with pks to 21/22. Doesn't sound like a huge change but makes a big difference.

If you want to live in SoCal and sail, you'll have to do what a lot of us do...........drive to the bay area and take trips to Maui
