Has anyone been to San Luis/Oneill Forebay lately? The weeds are usually pretty thick by this time of year but the water level has been reasonably high lately and I wonder if it is still sailable. Thanks... |

The weeds were pretty thick when I was out there on 31Jul (it was pretty fun- temperature around 90 degrees and blowing solid 5.2-5.8). Sailing with a pretty big wave-weed fin, I had to stop one out of every ten runs to clear a giant ball of weeds off my fin.
A little more raked pure weed fin, or a smaller version of the one I was using would have worked better. However, I never really felt like it was worth taking the time to change fins. You should have no trouble sailing if you have some kind of weed fin (don't bother going if you only have a wave fin).
The weeds are all still pretty healthy; so, there are none of those patches of wierd rotting green stuff that show up later in the year.

I was there this last weekend and the weeds are getting pretty healthy. I started off on a True Ames weed fin (44cm, 45 degree rake) and found myself towing weeds. I swtiched to a more agressive Curtis fin (40 cm, 40 degree rake) and sailed happily ever after, or at least until the wind punked out.
Don't even think about it without a weed fin. They were mowing weeds with this weird contraption and there were clumps of weeds free floating. |

Thanks for the info. I have a collection of 40 degree Curtis fins so I may give it a try if the water level stays up. I don't mind cutting channels through the weeds as long as the slime isn't too bad. |

I was there monday of this week and the level was 221 and ended at 221.5 There is a strip in the middle and a patch on the far side (assuming a launch from the north shore at the main entrance) What was amazing to me was that for the first time I saw them running the weed cutting boat. I have never seen this before I think because they wait till after September to run it most times. To check water levels look under the info section of the iwindsurf San Luis site for the link . Nobody there most of the time now its like having your own personal lake. Weed fin is needed though. |

This is good news, with the weed boat (puff puff) doing it's thing, fall sessions might be good w/no weed fin at all..I've sailed there numerous times in October w/no weed fin and without seeing weeds anywhere...
Thx for the report!! |

The best time to sail is generally first light (if you are that kind of person) or close to sunset. Lately, the pattern has been breaking down with wind in the 2-5pm range shutting down toward sunset.
As usual, the wind god can be cruel.
Have a look at some historic iwindsurf data to see the pattern. |

The weed condition at 221.9 is weeds are just under the surface no solid green patchs on top but there are floating clumps and places were they are just under the surface. The wind was very gusty today it was strongest around 2 pm . I got there at 12 pm and put up 4.7 went down to a 4.2 about 1:30 pm . I weigh about 215 so the there were people on smaller sails. Wind was gusty
and started tapering off around 5:30 . |
