Would anyone be interested in organizing/participating in a "fun" event or even a race from Coyote to 3rd Ave? Wouldn't it be a cool event to launch from the up wind site and blast downwind, out into the channel riding swell all the way? If it was an organized event there could even be transportation back to Coyote to pick up your car and maybe even a chase boat for safety sake. It would be a great way to strengthen the sailing community and have some fun. Who knows maybe even have t-shirts printed. Is there a local organization that would be interested in helping to put something like this together? Just a thought....

Hey windwiner,
ASD kicked off a "Downwinder Wednesday" series back in 2003. For the most part there was minimal participation and the wind was a frequent no-show.
here's some pics from then
You know what they say. Call a race and kill the wind.

That downwinder is an awesome idea and a very fun thing to do. I've done a few downwinders from Oyster to 3rd Ave and it's an adventure. Very fun and definitely a little crazy.
Seems like one idea would be for you and 2 or 3 buddies to do it, rather than necessarily trying to line up a larger posse. It just depends. Either way, plan it out, consider telling a couple people on shore, and consider what you'll want for safety gear in case something goes wrong. We all know that the wind can be finicky over long stretches for short boards like Mo alluded to, but June or July are certainly better bets than trying it late Summer.
And it is true that some of the sweetest swells are outside way out from Coyote Point marina...reaches rarely seen by windsurfers.

A group of kiters did just that last Thurs. or Fri. (forget which day). But the wind was good and the channel awsome.

Kiters do it all the time. Trying to organize windsurfers around here is another ball of wax. Kinda' like trying to herd cats

Did anyone go from Coyote to Alameda and back?
A reach that long would probably drive you crazy, not to mention the need to rig for both locations.

Hearing Andre tell the tales of his voyages from Coyote To Alameda is enough to place you in the fetal position -- or, depending on your nature, it can leave you perched on the bow of your board, itching to get underway, eating oranges to fend off possible upcoming scurvy, and peering out to sea.
He speaks of long almost windless stretches way the f*^k out there where it's just you and perhaps the faraway sound of those steel birds in the sky dancing around the various airports.
Apparantly Andre has seen some serious mental-toughness building experiences in his life such that any sense of danger regarding these several-mile voyages pales in comparison.
Me I generally like to hug it a bit tighter to the shoreline. Although I'll admit it would be a bonus to visit Jane/Rebecca and Jeff/Emily at the shops in Alameda...

Hey, maybe you should get everyone a GPS & notify the Coast Guard....
Seriously, it ain't no big thang - you could start at 3rd, sail up to Coyote then back and avoid the whole logisitcs biz.
Waddell to Davenport - now there's a downwinder.
