SF Bay Area sailors--
The San Francisco Boardsailing Association has for decades been the leading voice to promote access & safety in the SF Bay Area. Right now, we can use more active members to keep windsurfing safe & legal in your area! If you would like to be an SFBA rep for your local spot(s), sign up here:

http://sfba.org/stewards.php

What does it mean to be an SFBA Site Steward?:

1. WATCH YOUR LOCAL SPOTS: Volunteer to be a Site Steward for your local-favorite windsurf or kitesurf spot(s), and then KEEP AN EYE OUT for access issues.

2. USE THE LOCAL FORUMS: to talk it up with local sailors, including the iWindsurf.com and iKitesurf.com free public forums. This is the place to bring up issues and ask for opinions and ideas. The iWindsurf and iKitesurf Forums have a "PM" Private Message feature to send "emails" to fellow users.

3. USE SFBA.ORG: Use the Site Stewards page to see the current official list of Site Stewards for each Site, and to contact people one-on-one.

4. RECRUIT: Recruit your friends and fellow local sailors to volunteer to become Site Stewards.

*Site Stewards also have the opportunity to help by passing out SFBA newsletters, membership sign-up sheets, and safety flyers at their local spots from time-to-time. Socially-motivated folks can even host BBQs/Beach Clean-Ups/Safety Days: if approved ahead of time by the SFBA Board Of Directors, SFBA will cover the expenses ($).

See you on the water!,
George Haye

a report from SFBA Site Steward Hunt Hyde who frequents the Peninsula spots between Oyster Point and 3rd Ave:

Hey George,
I've sailed the various sites quite a bit lately and have only one observation as a steward to report. I've seen more and tangled with a few plastic jellyfish (floating plastic bags). They're small but even one floating jelly can easily cause a fully-wound catapult. I've had the good fortune of surviving 2 entanglements with the plastic jellys since January that after having been ripped out of my straps from a fully powered position and thrown violently but thankfully clear of the board, I had to take a big timeout to check the status of my spine, etc (all OK).

I suspect the waste facility at (either or both) South San Francisco or across from Candlestick are letting the jellys spawn during the frequent high winds that occur directly downwind from the coastal gaps where they built the facilities and where we love to sail.

Anyway, let the wind people be on watch downwind of these facilities (at Tigers, Coyote and 3rd) for the vaguely visible but dangerous, fin grabbing plastic jellys.

May you steer clear in time, Hunt
