there is a difference. freeride boards are made to plane early and are faster but dont turn as well. freestyle boards are looser and turn easier in general and arent as quick to plane. wave boards turn even faster but are not good planers and race boards are the fastest to plane, go the fastest and arent made to turn. race boards are hard to turn and take extra work to gybe. here is the trick; one of the biggest problems with the gybe is loosing speed and coming off plane-kills the gybe! SO In Summary if your heavy and want to plane early and stay on a plane go for freeride boards. And if your light and planing is not an issue a freestyle or even wave board will be easier to turn. Overall freeride boards such as the carve serve very well in most conditions and are user friendly. |

Alot of the freestyle boards are actually designed to be some of the quickest planing boards. They usually have good width which makes them very stable, but are generally slower than a freeride. The freeride boards designed to plane quick, be fast(not as fast as a race board) and to jibe easily. I would say if your not doing freestyle you should get a freeride board or a freestyle wave. I know Quatro and Goya make both and are awesome boards. Very user friendly. Check them out at www.quatrointernational.com and www.GoyaBoards.com |

Freestyle boards are the quickest to plane but have not so good top end speed. doing tricks back to back you need something with alot of off the line power but forgiving enough to allow the finishing spin of a spock 540. you dont really care about winning a drag race because a freestyler is sliding backwards while a racer is sheeting in. Also, they are pretty wide through the whole board to allow for sliding backwards or tail first riding, unlike freeride/race boards. freeride and more so race boards have sharper rails to keep there lines straighter for better speed. Its toughest to turn a race boards then freeride then freestyle then wave, which are loose but slow. hope this helps... |

Just wanted to point out. freestyle boards will plane faster than freeriders in the same volume! get your facts right!
they will not go as fast as freeriders, but in general they will be very stable and probably will make jibes easier. ! |

the real question is you skill level. if you cant plane thru a turn on a freeride board, you wont do it on a freestyle or wave board.
its all about speed into the turn. ya gotta go fast into a turn to go fast out of it. most people scrub speed by sailing to hard to wind at the start of the turn. the turn is shape like a j and it is difficult to keep your speed. mostly because of a late sail flip. this is cause because your gaining speed into the turn. you can not flip your sail if its fully powered. try starting your turn by bearing off the wind. get as much speed as you can. when you going directly down wind flip your sail. because your going faster than the wind speed, the sail will rotate with little or no pull from the wind. the turn will be much wider and you will exit with lots of speed. the key is speed speed speed. have quick hands and feet on your sail flip. change your stance and plane out of your turn.. this concept is the reason you can do a duck gybe and not get pulled off the front of your board..have fun and happy sailing |

Thats odd. Below you said:
How difficult would it be to reach with a board designed specifically for freestyle? I wonder if a moderately skilled sailor can pick up one or the other and not find them that different.
Your question was about skill, not price. |

well you wrong about few things here.
a. freestyle board might make jibing easier.
b. one of the advanced jibing technics if you wanna tirn on a dime is to head upwind for a second before initiating you jibe. this makes sale lighter when you finally start going downwind and makes sale flip easier. |
