I usually sail at Rio Vista but noticed that San Luis Forebay/Resevoir is the same distance from Stockton. Is the wind consistent and strong like Rio? Andy

According to yahoo/maps, Rio Vista is 31 miles from Stockton. San Luis is about 60 mi. Maybe youre exceeding the posted speed on Hwy5 to make up the time??? :>)
I dont think there is a wind advantage either, they both blow when the valley is hot and the theres lots of fog on the coast. Maybe check the archives on IW to verify but I would bet Sherman blows more often. S.L. seems to be more critical of wind direction with the surrounding mountains.

45 minutes either place. 12 can get ugly with traffic. I was thinking it would be nice not having to fight the currents and tides. Thanks for your response. Andy

No currents or tides but you will need a weed fin as summer rolls on.

Coach is right, youll need a weed fin after July. The water level in the forbay fluxuates daily which exposes more weeds and makes the sand bars on the south side very shallow. Ask the locals where they are.
There used to be a govt website to check the level, maybe someone knows the link. (I havent sailed there in years.) The ranger there should know it too.

san louis is a great place to get your water starts or jibes down, or just have no stress fun speed sailing. check out the local info section of IW when youre considering a new spot. For San Louis it reads The best water level is 221 - 224. Below 219.5 you may enounter sand bars with longer fins. The link to check the water height is http://cdec.water.ca.gov/cgi-progs/queryFx?ONF

Its kinda funny that weeds and sandbars often go hand in hand. My (weed)fin hit a sandbar at Bird Island Basin a couple years ago, resulting in a huge catapult. I still have a scar on my shin. If I had a more upright fin I might have broken my leg.

if sanbar and shallowness are in issue, its always good to schlog across the first time to make sure its sailable - I really hurt my back many years ago at San Louis and learned the hard way.
