Although I didnt sail today, I was out at Kalmus flying a big kite and thought somebody might want to see a report. The tropical storm was a real nothing, but there was some interesting light winds in the mid afternoon from the S.W. Some guys were doing o.k. with big sails (9.0 down to 6.5). One guy told me that I could put the kite up because it wasnt crouded. I was shocked as I had seen more WSers on one beach than I have seen in ten years. Heaven forbid that Ill be there on a crouded day. I had a large stretch of beach to myself for the trainer, but some college kid life guard came running down from the swimmers side and read me the riot act.

Kiting is banned at Kalmus. Be careful where you fly a kite.
West Dennis has specific places where you can kite. I dont kite, just windsurf, but we gotta adhere to the rules.

Sorry, but Ill always sail at least a meter bigger sail than you. Sunday, I had to settle with a small 7.1 and could of used the 8.4 if I wasnt waiting for a boom part. To your credit, though, Im sure the Kalmus winds were higher than where I was.

There are a bunch of uptight kiters at W. Dennis who will stretch the rules in favor of their almighty authority figures. The dunes are roped off but you can fly a kite over them as long as you arent seen crashing it into the dunes. I dont know who told you Kiting was banned, but after the lifeguards leave, you can kite. Its all a matter of avoiding the bad attitudes. I fly land kites which also fall in a grey area.

Like Paul said, kiting is banned at Kalmus during the day while the lifeguards are on duty. Once the lifeguards leave kiting is allowed.

As for the roped off area in W.Dennis, its obvious its roped off for a reason. Only a moron would fly a kite over the roped off area and screw it up for the rest of the kiters.

There is no kite flying of any type during the day. If you cant deal with it go somewhere else.

Only a moron would put up a message like that. The dunes are roped off but not posted. A small trainer kite flying from the shore barely adjacent to the dune grass offers no threat to it. The rest of the kiters should mind their own business. However, since they are an obnoxious bunch of people, they dont.

According to Phil at Inland Sea, it was an un-written rule that kiters would not fly their kites before 5 p.m. However, a number of kite surfers started to join the WSers during the day. When warned, many have acted in a very obnoxious manner. This has lead to the lifeguards to taking a rigid stance. However, there still isnt any law banning kiting in the WSing area.
