Hood River family of 4 looking for a two week sailing trip. Both parents are accomplished, 10 year old is in straps and up on a plane in 15 to 25 mph in the main channel of the Columbia River. 7 year old is also able to sail in the main river, starting to hook in, but not on a plane.

Where should we go for warm, flatish water where 10 year old can work on planning gybes, 7 yr old on hooking in and leaning back? If dad can kite there thats a bonus. We would rent sailing gear (I think?). Travel times would be around Thanksgiving, Xmas, or possible late March.

If you are still awake, chime-in please!

Eric

For the Caribbean everyone seems to love Bonaire.

Closer to home, South Padre Island, TX is a great flat water place that is very good in Oct-Nov, and also April-May. Huge shallow Laguna Madre bay is a great learning spot. Good for kiting as well.

Corpus/North Padre Island sure comes to mind. March and November are two of its three windiest months, maximizing the odds of wind breaking the 20 mph threshold (it may break it more often in May, but the heat and humidity then are absolutely incredible, like nothing youve ever seen in the Gorge). Camp by the water, rent there, city nearby, and some of the most beginner/novice/intermediate-friendly venues around. The incredible heat will have backed off, and at Bird Island you can walk for miles in the water. Even the 10-YO can find chest-deep and shallower water many places. And if youre lucky, a front or three will rip through to power up Mom and Dads 5.x, 4.x, maybe even 3.x sails.

You can fly to Corpus and rent everything, but that limits your sailing to Bird Island, which might be fine for the kids but would restrict the parents options if a solid front blows through.

If you drive and camp, you will save a bundle on lodging, rental gear, and food, and should catch some good sailing on the drive. Its a 3-day drive with fairly frequent sailing venues on the way and at least Nov and Mar can be pretty windy and warnish or at least tolerable; Lake Morgan at the Four Corners area is a great place IF you catch a front or jet stream passing through, with the warmest water youve EVER sailed in and very friendly sailing conditions for everyone.

Eric and Holly,
MARGARITA!!! It has what you need-chest deep, warm water with a sandy bottom out 100 meters-with side shore wind-flat on the inside and great bump and jump on the outside. Great kiting with loads of equipment available for both kite and windsurf.
You wont need a car as you can walk from any lodgings to the beach in minutes-and as a bonus-its the least expensive living in the carribean!!!
March is one of the best months but Nov. and Dec. are the start of the windy season. If you need lodgings we have rooms and apartments only 100 meters from the beach-see our ad in the classifieds here.
See ya in Margarita!

I second Bonaire. Going back in February for the third year in a row. Dont go in the fall though. No wind and the rainy season. January to June is the windy season in Bonaire. Dad wont be able to kite at the windsurfing beach, but can Kite on the leward side of the Island about 5 min away.

At the beach there are 2 different rental outfits with different gear, and 2 seperate beach bars. The water is waist deep for as far as the kids will want to sail, but you can go outside for good bump and jump.
