Army Corps of Engineers cant seem to
operate dams on the Columbia River without spilling oil all the time. Yet another oil spill at The Dalles Dam, just up
stream from the central windsurfing sites. Anyone have word yet on how
much oil and if it was contained ?? And where are all the
environmental groups when ya need em ???

Worse yet, I heard that construction has started on the double tracks at Dougs Beach. I believe its still open, but the parking is limited. Did anyone sail there today and can give us a first hand report?

I was the wind dummy, first to arrive, good 4.2 all day.... sailed 10:30 to 5:30... unusually good AM sesh for Dougs.

Yes indeed, railroad folks have wasted no time in tearing apart the entire west side of Dougs parking area.... they seem to have taken full advantage of the opportunity to start tearing out, even though there are appeals going on (the jerks).... its a complete mess!! I would not recommend sailing Dougs.

Maybe us windsurfers should apply to become an endangered spicies.... then maybe they will leave us alone?

Funny (not really). Did you ever notice that they never build this crap through golf courses or tennis courts? Only surfing and windsurfing spots. You never hear of save the golf course groups because theyd have nothing to do. It stinks.

I hope you guys sent money to back up yer [legitimate] complaints. If this isnt the definitive battle between us and the RRs, I dont know what is. Theyre breaking several laws with their siding location, and if we cant stop them now in court we SURE arent going to stop them from the next spots they choose which DONT break laws. Weve already lost several sites due to their paranoia; its time to put our money where our mouths are or quit our whining, roll over, and accept the RRs domination.

Well.... sorry to break the news to ya, Mike, but the battle is already OVER.... BNSF is tearing apart the Dougs parking area as we write this.... its done, finished, caaaaput!! Railroads take no prisoners, they have no mercy.... they dont rationalize, and they certainly NEVER, EVER negotiate with ANYONE on ANYTHING!! Of all people, YOU should understand this by now, dude. Why spend money on a lost cause? Railroad never did want us to park at Dougs, its an at-grade parking area next to their tracks.... they never did feel it was safe. The logistics of an overpass just doesnt work there. So, Dougs is history... reality is we need to move on and find another beach.... THATS what we all should be spending the money on, not a dead horse.

How does money (short of 8 figures) buy launches? And why did the vaunted anti-development Gorge Commission approve the Dougs siding?

Railroads were grandfathered into the Gorge long before GC came along. Seems like everyone who has any interest in development in the Gorge are all hitting now at the same time, and theres an internal battle taking place between Freinds of the Gorge and GC over the proposed casino. Also, the GC director just resigned... so way too many changes taking place and things are slipping by them. Im sure thats why BNSF is doing this now.

Lots of potential launch sites in the Gorge, many are State Parks. Wyeth is a good example. I heard they were planning to build an overpass over the RR tracks there. Great east/west wind, good swell site for the PDX folks. Just needs some cleanup and porta-poops. Theres lots of open space with potential for camping sites right on the edge of the river... imagine that.

Dougs Beach is not lost. As I see it, all were losing (in the long term) is about 50 of the worst paking spots at Dougs that sit empty and unused about 350 days/year anyway. Only the timing of the construction is unfortunate. The RR had hoped to start construction in November and would have been finished by now with no interruption to summer sailing. As it stands, it looks like the construction will last all summer and take away all of the parking on the west side (instead of just half) for this season.

The CGWA and Save Dougs coalition ARE presently negotiating with the RR, just as the CGWA has successfully done in the past -- something even Corps of Engineers spokesmen have described on-the-record as virtually impossible. Negotiations cannot be discussed now, but may reach public light by June. Your assumptions are not helping the process.
