If it's a big hassle for you, don't feel obligated to make the drive. Our primary objective was removal of brush and trees emerging along the shoreline including the beachfront, but the Corps informed me today of a new policy: The Columbia River shoreline must be allowed to revert to its natural state within 30 feet of the water's edge. They told me we will not be permitted to remove any living plants in that zone. Result: short term . . . not a lot of work required at Roosevelt this spring. Long term . . . a large political effort my become necessary to keep the Roosevelt beach physically accessible; just look at the native shoreline east and west of Rosey, and consider the large quantity of tough, thorny, deep-rooted, waist-high, fast-growing saplings we removed from the main beach last spring.

But we pulled it off anyway. Couldn't cut the brush back as much as we wanted, but it looks good. The folks who spent days raking last month gave us a great head start so we weren't there all day today. Thanks, Roger and John and Julie for that early start.

Tell 'em you'll do just that...30 feet from the NATURAL water line! (presumably somewhere waaaay out in the middle of the channel).

The corps of engineers demanding the river in it's natural state. Thats rich.
