From the CGWA:
Protect Dougıs Beach parking. Send letters via email, fax or snail mail by
February 9th. Remember to add your name and address.

Send to:

Derek I. Sandison, Central Regional Director
WA State Department of Ecology
15 West Yakima Ave, Ste 200, Yakima, WA 98902-3452
PH: 509-575-2940 Fax: 509-575-2809
dsan461@ecy.wa.gov

Reference: Lyle Siding Improvement Project Dougıs Beach

cc to: info@gorgecommission.org, dharkenrider@fs.fed.us,
bill.koss@parks.wa.gov, rich.davis@parks.wa.gov, cgwa@gorge.net,
scotts@co.klickitat.wa.us, bocc@co.klickitat.wa.us, honeyfor_ji@leg.wa.gov,
sheila_babb@murray.senate.gov, maria_cantwell@cantwell.senate.gov

List reasons why. Here are just few suggestions:

1. Recreation weıre part of the environment too. Examples

a. SAFETY Rescue vehicles will wait too long to get to injured while
trains are slowly entering and/or leaving the siding

b. SAFETY - Parked trains will block pedestrian vision of oncoming trains

c. SAFETY - Will less parking create other safety issues?

d. SAFETY Health - locomotive discharges due to exhaust and leaking
fluids

2. Scenic

a. ESTHETIC Parked trains block views in Scenic Area

b. ESTHETIC Parked trains & double track create an industrial
appearance

3. Cultural/Historical & A State Park

a. Lewis & Clark stopover

b. Native American Village

4. Plants/Aquatic Life/, etc. - please add what you know

Please include your name and address to be counted.

Your letters are needed again for the third time in the last couple of
months regarding the proposal to construct an approximately 8,000 linear
foot railroad siding along the existing BNSF rail line corridor beginning
about 200 feet west of the Dougıs Beach driveway.

If this goes through, you will lose almost half of the parking at Dougıs.
The current fence will be moved 8 feet north toward the highway. Back in
parking will be eliminated west of the driveway, and the highway department
will demand parallel parking for this section. (East of the driveway is to
remain unchanged.)

The Washington State Department of Ecology ³has determined that this
proposal, with mitigation described in the attached Environmental Checklist,
will not have a probable significant adverse impact on the environment. An
environmental impact statement (EIS) is not required under RCW
43.21C.030(2)(c). This decision was made after review of a completed
environmental checklist and other information on file with the lead agency.²

Idle threat? No way. In fact, its a given unless we raise numerical hell. Hopelss? No; the CGWA has saved Dougs, the Hatch, and several other sites for us in the past. Theyre one of the few organizations the RRs have paid any attention to.

DO something, folks. Get off it and help the CGWA save it for all of us.
