It's pretty clear to me that the issue of guns and weapons is getting carried away. So many folks are too tripped out on the 2th Admendment.
Bard, aren't you one of those folks?
You know, I've never owned a weapon, so I'm normally not thinking in those terms. If I did buy a gun because I was fearful or wanted to be empowered against all odds, I'd have to devote a lot of time thinking about it. Also, that would mean that I would have to practice with it regularly, and I would most likely meet others that were fascinated with guns. Shared paranoia.
Quite honestly, I really don't like the idea of everyone carrying a gun around, particularly free of regulations. |

There are over 100 million guns in the US, and every time a Democrat gets elected sales boom. Many Democrats own guns, and support gun rights. As for what's in my safe, I'll keep that quiet just in case one of you guys is a burglar.
As for the militarization of local police, it is pervasive, and encouraged by the Feds. I believe in my heart that they are very worried about social unrest. Why else would they buy another 700 million rounds of hollowpoint ammo? PS, they only use hollowpoint to kill people, not at the range.
And the gun collectors probably feel the same way as the Feds do. |

When I was a kid with a hunting rifle they passed fed laws regulating tommy guns.
The gun store put up signs letting us know they were actually taking all our guns away. I believed them and was outraged.
The gun sellers have been using that trick every time a dem gets elected.
There are a lot of sheep out there who own guns that repeat this nonsense and never caught on in thirty years of the same lie.
I even heard it here last year. How bout it guys- did Obama take your guns away or was that HS you were spouting -again? |

“We see the percentage of households owning guns declining,” he said, “and that indicates that those who already own guns are buying more of them.” |

The only place I've heard even mention militarizing police in the U.S. is this forum. |

1.5 million soldiers in our military, another 800,000 in reserves. Let's say 2 million guns. Police forces? Add another 800,000 guns. Grand total on the conservative side, say 3 million guns, assuming 1 per.
It is estimated that there are about 270 million guns in civilian hands. I'd say our government needs some more firepower to balance things out. I mean we live in a "fair and balanced" world right? I think you might be on to something Bard. I am building a turret and a safe room! Not because of the 270,000,000 civilian guns, but it's those 3,000,000 military and police guns I am worried about.
But then again, being zapped from space by a U.S. laser, or my house incinerated by a tomahawk, maybe I should be building a nuclear warhead. |

That's a good point. The 2nd Amendment gives me the right to bear arms. The US was engaged in a nuclear arms races with the Soviet Union. Therefore, nukes are arms and the 2nd Amendment gives me the right to bear the same. We should all have the right to possess a nuke. I feel safer already. |

These must be the outcomes that conservative gun nuts want; they keep happening and the Tea party keeps helping:
Quote: | April 29, 2013
Americans Wanted Gun Background Checks to Pass Senate
Support varies from 85% among Democrats to 45% among Republicans
by Frank Newport
PRINCETON, NJ -- Sixty-five percent of Americans say the U.S. Senate should have passed the measure that would have expanded background checks for gun purchases, while 29% agree with the Senate's failure to pass the measure.
(Asked of a half sample) As you may know, last week the U.S. Senate voted on, but did not pass, a measure to expand background checks for gun purchases. Do you think the Senate should or should not have passed the measure to expand background checks for gun purchases? April 2013 results
These data are from Gallup Daily tracking conducted April 22-25, about a week after the Senate's April 17 vote on the background check measure, which failed when 54 senators voted "yea," short of the 60 votes needed to avoid a filibuster and pass the measure.
Prior to the Senate's failure to pass the measure, numerous polls showed that roughly nine in 10 Americans favor expanded gun background checks in concept -- a fact that a number of journalists, columnists, and politicians made note of. Gallup's Jan. 19-20 survey, for example, showed that 91% of Americans said they personally would vote for a measure requiring criminal background checks for all gun sales. Gallup asked this question again in the April 22-25 survey and found a slight decline, to 83% support. The wording of the new question was slightly modified from the January asking, which may be responsible for some of the change. But it also may be that the Senate's failure to pass the measure deflated Americans' support for it.
Trend: Next, suppose that on Election Day you could vote on key issues as well as candidates. Would you vote for or against a law that would -- require background checks for all gun purchases? |
I get it. Background checks for nukes only. |

OK, I Googled it. I had assumed you guys were talking about Marshall law. What I found instead was a bunch of left wing gun-haters crying about local and state police upgrading their weapons in an arms race with the criminals they face. Some idiot at Reuters, for example, was aghast that a cop might be armed with an AR-15.
REALLY? The gun most easily used by a housewife and widely wielded by murderous criminals, and these reactionary liberals don’t want them in the hands of the men and women who stand between those criminals and our families? IMO, the police protecting me should have everything up to and including RPGs, flame throwers, armed drones, electronics to disable my car from any distance, heavy machine guns, Air Cobras, tanks, 500-pound conventional bombs, and freaking Godzilla … and I’m dead serious. Anything they can use to stop an undisputed bad guy with the least risk to the public is fine by me.
The issue for me is not what weapons they possess; it’s whether they have the training and restraint to use them judiciously. We’ve all seen many news stories in which some of those weapons would have saved innocent lives and/or lessened collateral damage or public risk. I don’t want my police (or my country or myself) in a fair fight; I want them to have an absolutely overwhelming advantage, and to use it properly and effectively as necessary, if forced into a fight. Fair fights are for John Wayne movies and MMA, not real life. |
