I have an old RCA Lyra, which I got off eBay because it is small, cheap and has an SD slot. I have about 2 hours worth of classic energy rock stuff on it, ranging from ZZ Top to Talking Heads.
The Lyra gets the SD slot taped over, then goes into a ziplock baggie. The earbuds plug in and the cord comes out the corner of the baggie. The baggie gets rolled a couple of times and stuffed down the front of my wetsuit so it sits over my sternum.
So is it waterproof? - well, I have about a minute to get out of the water before some weeps into the baggie, but it is still working after several years. And if it dies, well, I am out $4.50.
The problem with the setup is the earbuds. I have some old trusty Sony "in ear" buds that I got with a sports walkman years ago, and they seem to be the best water "resistant" ones I can find. Tried the waterproof ones, and the sound they made was horrible - at least back then.
Sailing with tunes is great. Used to worry about not hearing a barge horn, but now I can't recall the last time a barge honked on the Columbia...
