Hi, me and my wife are Gorge sailors. We are going to aruba in april, and I am trying to figure out a place to stay and sail. We are looking for something relaxed, not part of the hotel crowd, and afordable. Any advices, or links would be much apreciated.

Thank you,
sasha

Check out Vela - they can do a package including the Boardwalk which is on the other side of the highway from the beach and is populated mostly by windsurfers. Much lower cost than the big beachfront highrises.

Sunset run by JP and Eef are nice if you can get the oceanfront rooms. We liked Boardwalk as well. Both well run and clean. Lock up when you are out and sleeping.

I hear Sailboard vacations equipment is kind of old. Is that true? and how is Active Vacations?

SBV's gear was spotty (some good, some not so good) in 2008 when I was there. SBV's best attribute is the launch, which is easier than Vela's. Vela has the most gear and the best gear. The Boardwalk is both affordable and nice as a place to stay (but you need to book early).

If you haven't booked for Aruba yet you might consider Bonaire, which on the whole is better at the things Aruba is famous for (wind, easy to sail shallow flat water) than Aruba.

I second Mike's vote for Bonaire obviously. I cannot seem to enjoy offshore sailing in Aruba or the gusty conditions. I did fare better at SBV as a launch as opposed to Vela BUT wayyy back then, the gear at SBV was so so and we had problems with our accommodations but again, that was a LONG time ago. Vela's gear IMHO is better. Aruba is a better island if you love night life, casinos and jewelry shopping. They have great dining options but many indoors. Eagle Beach rocks. Palm Beach phooey..
