Is there anyone in the Chesapeake Bay / Outerbanks area giving windsurfing lessons these days? Chances of learnable wind the first week of March?

Thanks,

Hugh

There are a lot of shops in the OBX that do lessons, but I doubt any of them are open that early in the season. March can have some mild winds and mild weather, but is more likely to have strong winds and cool or cold weather. Hardcore types windsurf year round, but the windsurfing-tourist season doesn't really start until April.

If I were you I would go through the list of NC windsurfing shops and schools on the windsurfing magazine website and see which, if any, offer lessons in march.

Good luck.

I'm wondering if I might stop there on my way back to New England. I would have to rent or demo equipment, though. Perhaps I'll take a kiting lesson.

Oh, NO! You're coming back?

Brucie, why can't you stay in Florida with your friend Markie, the pool guy?

jsntg-

I'm all the way down in Hatteras, and if you've got the cajones to deal with some gnarly weather, I'll gladly give you a windsurfing lesson in March! I'm out of town that first week, but should be around for the next, umm, 8 months straight after that...

I'm not sure what you're equipped with- if we luck out on weather, you may be able to make do with a 3/2 wetsuit (which you can rent through our partner shop, HIB, if you don't own your own). Last March, I used a 6/5/4 for 11 sessions and a 3/2 for 14... so I guess the chances are pretty good that you'll be fine in a 3/2. Smile

Feel free to PM me if you have any more specific questions, or you want to set something up Very Happy

Most of the shops don't really officially open the doors until April 1st, but if we're around, we're happy to help you out (I work for Sailworld, but that's true for most everyone around here).
