The quickest way to cover flat terrain (lake) is a: straight line!

99% of my sailing has been on lakes, and I have to snuggle right up to an upwind shoreline to find a spot with no chop or swell. Even there, it's interesting to lift the windward rail, expose the bottom of a longboard to the wind, and see how much air one can catch with a 7.5 on absolutely flat water. I watched a guy consistently put five to six feet of air under his shortboard fin on a "fogged mirror", i.e., knee-deep water with barely a ripple on the surface (Fred Howard Park, Tampa, just offshore in strong offshore winds). I've watched Elliot Leboe land loop after loop on slightly lumpy knee-deep water with a 6.5 7-cammed race sail. Unless one's on a 12.0 and a table top, the option usually exists to vary one's routine, and videos are a great motivator and tutor.

Besides, if I needed to be on the other side of the lake ASAP, I'd leave earlier. Wink
