I'm taking my wife to Laguna Beach for a vacation at the end of October. Is there any place within an hour's drive where I could rent some halfway decent gear and get out? Can anyone let me know the types of conditions in the area?

I'm not much of a wave sailor but love bump and jump swell. Didn't plan this as a windurfing trip but after a season of getting skunked in the Northeast (one of the lousiest wind seasons for cape code/Rhode island I can remember), I'm itching to get a session in on the West coast.

Any help you could give a Rhode Island windsurfer is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You'll really get skunked at Laguna, but up at Seal Beach and at Cabrillo you can sail occaisionally in Oct. You can rent in Cabrillo, but a trip North or inland for a day might work. Make sure to check the forecast before renting.
Best to bring snorkeling gear.

Hi DC,

Your true opportunities are really quite slim for that area. I lived in Laguna Beach during my senior year in college 70/71, and the conditions for windsurfing that can be expected in October are decidedly quite weak.

However, for surfing the scene can be totally different. The opportunities for surfing in the Huntington Beach (by the pier) and the Santa Ana River Mouth (upper Newport Beach) areas can be quite good. October is almost always a favorable month for both late south and early west swells. The surfing scene can be notable.

I live in Laguna and can tell you that October doesn't really happen. Typically windsurfing requires a 30-60 minute drive up the coast. In October I wouldn't bother making the drive - conditions are spotty at best. Consider snorkeling (you'll need a wetsuit), surfing, kayaking or mountain biking. If you have any questions just send me a PM.

David

Try Captain Kirks in San Pedro and sailing at nearby Cabrillo Beach.

Try Windsurf Deal in Palos Verdes. I think they have 2008 KA Sails/Crazyfly Boards for rent, but call to make sure.

Thank you all for the advice. I may just rent a surf board instead but it's good to keep my options open. Thanks!
