Overall, I would vote the best two months of the year being:
May and October
PS: for good weather data specific to Hatteras, see the "Weather Links" section on www.obxbeachlife.com. I have the regular weather sites I like to check, posted there. Its in the right hand side bar on the blog. Further down, I also have the NOAA weather forecast feed as well.
If you are in DC, you could likely catch the long weekend runs to catch a sesh any time of the year. Vacate DC around 2:00am on Fri night/Sat morning, and be in Avon before 9:00am. If you can get together with some of the crew who make those runs on a regular basis, carpooling is a nice option as well.
PS: Windy weather this weekend... LoopFest LoopOff too! Coming down?
enjoy!

I've been going to Hatteras for 20 years on and off and April is the best month for wind and the weather is decent. Not to cold or hot, average temp is around 60. |

Been going to Avon for about 15 years (from MA).
For about ten years I went down Nov.Thanksgiving week, and it was really hit or miss, mostly miss.
Now I take the family April school vacation week, with much greater success, most years I sail at least five days in the sound/ocean, although last year I got skunked...

Me, being from FL, I've got to think Oct might be better. In the fall the water temps are decreasing from their summer highs, right? Warmer water and a little crisp in the air suits me more betta. |

Bill is not giving up the local's secret of June. I've scored good weeks(3 to5 days on small to medium stuff) in any april week, may and thanksgiving, but spent a week there once in june and sailed 4.2 and 5.0(210#) 7 days, and local sailors say june is usually 20/30 days sailable, all warm SW. maybe just legend, haven't checked the charts that closely.

1st week of May has been really good to me in years past. Good wind and quite a few days in boardshorts. |

Regarding June, yea it is really a fantastic month when the Bermuda High kicks in. We have it RIGHT NOW, and this weekend is absolutely fantastic!! Yesterday, was pure bliss, especially the ocean where crystal clear blue water, warmth, sunshine, and pumping 4.5m SW wind! Waves too!!
These conditions are set to last though early next week!
If you have not seen my report from yesterday, check it out:
Just Plain Fun!!!
New short video clip of the action up too!
