A day like that makes you appreciate the smooth rollers that are usually there. A 4.7 was plenty, and the sensor was underreporting the gusts, which felt more like 20-30. The closer you got to Pt. Potrero the stronger it was. All in all exhausting but also exhilirating! |

It's drizzling outside my window this Saturday a.m. (its almost June!?!) and the forecast is iffy (at best) for most sites. Anybody else have any wind Friday? Thoughts on today / entire weekend?
It's looking like we may want to start a separate thread for other activities...movie matinees, etc., rather than use this thread. |

OK, Larkspur was reading 18 at 12:30. For those of you that don't sail there, that means 5.0 max. Sailed a 93 liter board with a 5.0 sail powered inside and out until 3:00 when I was feeling OP'd. Came in and decided to quit. Shortly after that the wind got a bit iffy. Glad I didn't rig down.
Not a shred of fog, which is unusual for Larkspur to be windy. Lots of dreadlocks in the water. That's ok tho, they don't mess with your fin and line up perfectly with the wind direction. Kind of like those Peter Hart videos where they show the little arrows showing you where the wind is.

steve, you're giving away our secret. SW18kts@ larkspur=5.0
larkspur didn't fade after 3:00, maybe even got stronger after a short lull. a little light inside but outside it was 5.0/85L totally powered up until after 5.
might happen again today with a little clearing. just keep your mouth closed if you fall in. |

Hey George,
It nuked for 3 days - I got mine at 3rd and coyote. My old 3.7 zeta survived some intense sailing thyose days. In spots it felt like the jet stream was touching down and carving holes in the water. There were some of largest port ramps that I've ever seen on the bay and breaking swell on the inside those 3 days...fun!
The wild water snatched my vhf and garmin out of my hard to get into fanny pack. I hope the wind gods are happy with the offering.
I got replacements today.

jlisenko,
Did you launch at dog poop park or over at Marina Bay? I weight about 175 and a 5.2 would have been marginal getting off the beach. Out in the main wind, it would have been okay, but it would have sucked getting out there. Also I found with the voodoo chop and it's quick frequency, that it was nice to just hang on the harness lines and pop up on a plane, no pumping or work involved |

The far Marina Bay launch is best on a west/southwest wind. It's at the very end where the kiddie park is. You can get out to past Brooks Is. really quick, and then the rollers get more even, and you can just relax and go back and forth between the Island and the race track (or south of the track toward the Berkeley Marina). That's what I did today on a 5.9 (I'm a lightweight at 145). Good sailing from 2 to past 4 (better than the sensor showed). It made the subsequent trip to Costco with my wife bearable - even fun, at times.

4 Windsurfers and two kiters out this afternoon at Its Beach . Windsurfers on 5.0's it looked like that was about right for sail size . 4 Windsurfers out at Natural Bridges it looked like there were holes based on there speed. Estimated sail size 5.0 one guy out on big stuff. |

Seems a lot of people hit Sherman today (Memorial Day). Sailed in the afternoon (4pm). Sensor was showing 20 - 22 average at marker 14. I have no idea where it gets these readings. I was at the Access (RVWA launch) and was getting 10 - 20 on my gauge and a lot of people were slogging.
Anyway rigged a 5.7 (NW 5.11) with a 95 liter board and went out and played. Never really overpowered, but there were some soft spots. A bunch of power boats came through on their way home and totally screwed up the water for a while. Towards the end the wind backed off and the flood came on.
All in all, still a fun session.... |
