hey,
I recently acquired a shred mobile and built a rack and all that stuff. I have my boards in board bags to protect them from heat, but I notice that many people don't store their boards in bags in their shredmobiles.
not using the bags would save space.
what are your opinions - to bag, or not to bag?
my boards are an RRD freestyle wave 102, an RRD zride 133, a seatrend allstar 80, a homebuilt carbon 115 slalom board, a GO 170, an old AHD 8'6", and I just ordered an Exocet Pacer.
of course, not all boards fit in the van at the same time.
thanks for your ideas.

Is it a full size van? I can fit at least 6 boards inside my van plus at least 7 sails, booms, masts, fins, extensions, wetsuits, tools, girlfriend, dog, and have room to change inside. I find I can get a bunch of boards in by keeping them boards in their bags. Rather than have individual board racks (which take up a lot of space), I basically have two uprights that go from floor to ceiling located about 1/3rd the way across. The boards are stacked on their sides five across between the wall and the uprights. Then another board is layed on top of the pile. A rack above the boards holds smaller sails. Small masts on the floor between the boards, big masts hung on the ceiling. Big booms hung on the uprights. And a deck at wheel-well height on the side opposite the boards. Big sails are thrown under the deck. I can get changed or even sleep on the deck.
If I were going to put individual board racks in the van, I would probably do away with the board bags. As long as the boards are secure in their racks, there's really no need for the bag.

I store my boards (RRD Freestyle Waves too) in my full size van. All custom work for storing gear. Two stacked upright next to each other top left behind driver (1 w/ board bag to protect against the other w/o), with padding under them. Third board is in bag on shelf. Shelves for sails 4.0-6.9 on right. Larger sails and masts on shelf on left. Booms in middle upright. Bed on top (high topper). I don't worry about vent screws even here in Florida (though windows are always cracked).

Oh yeah, and I almost forgot, my Kona goes right down the middle up high (on top of the bed). Pacer is shorter though. I have the Kona tied in the back. That's after cracking a windshield a few years back braking hard with an untethered Prodigy (40lb missile). Glass is free though (thanks State Farm!)

My board bags have hung in my garage since I built racks in my shredmobile. Bags just waste precious space if the boards are securely racked. Only if I carry along an extra board will I bag one and toss it on the floor.

I used board bags for about a month after I set up my van, then realized that they were hindering me, not helping.
-They take up space.
-They take time to use (bagging and unbagging the board)
-The boards don't need the protection.
I sold my board bags at a swap meet. I only travel with four boards, however...if I meant to travel with six I'd probably keep the Go and one other board on the roof.
Here is a link to some info on how I set up my van (Ford E150)

No bags for sure.
Make sure the van interior temps don't get too high. Leave rear window open and at least one front window cracked 2" and use unlock knobs that can't be grabbed easily from outside. |

Zirtaeb,
Yup, I've been going no bags since 2008. Check date on previous posts. The van is getting rusted out now. It was old to begin with. Another year or two before a new one. |
