The problem, I think, is that there are vocal people on the side of keep the beach access fully open who really care little about the environment and only care about their imminent domain and 'freedom' to use public lands.

When one group of people pushes for total access it is more likely another will push for total ban. Neither are good or smart or what I am suggesting.

Thanks for listening! Wink

fortheloveofital,

With all due respect, there is no group "pushing" for total access, rather they are reacting to the "push" for a total ban: the public has always enjoyed a freedom of total access that was guaranteed to them when the land was first donated. See this 1952 letter, where the National Park Service director Conrad Wirth guraranteed that "there will always be access to the beach for all people, whether they are local residents or visitors." http://www.savehatteras.com/CoastalndTimesArticleq.pdf In fact, most of the OBX beaches at this time are already closed to driving.

I also must disagree with your inflammatory and unfounded statement that those who want to keep the beach access "fully open" have "care little about the environment". Many, in fact, care much more about the environment than you give them credit.

As Geohaye suggested, if no one is granted access, then no one will care, and no one will stop the developers in 15-20 years.

Judge uses common sense, Beach Access to be "status quo" unitl Negotiated Rulemaking is completed. so come on down to Hatteras. Last Weekend Ego beach was the spot and for those who didn't want to walk from the Hole over the dunes to the ocean, you could drive over from Ramp 38. Looks like the Lighthouse is the spot for today and tomorrow with NE at 30+ forecast and happening.

The Judge didn't do ANYTHING: the Environmentalists settled with the Park Service which basically rolled over because they didn't want to fight. The local governments are NOT happy, and the fishermen are furious.

If you read the settlement at here, you'll see that access is even more restricted at Oregon Inlet, Cape Point, South Beach, Hatteras Inlet, and the North and South Ends of Ocracoke.

Even the surfers recognize that the REAL threat is a complete closure of beach access:
Quote:
"They (Defenders of Wildlife and Audubon) are not fooling us, because they really don't care about the piping plover, and they really don't care about you and me! They will not stop until the beaches are closed entirely. People need to wake up or they will not have a beach."

Oh yeah, one other nice tidbit: the attorneys fees for the Environmentalists are being paid by you, the Taxpayer.

1. Piping plovers taste like chicken.
2. Judges do not act with 'common sense' see stellaawards.com for proof.
3. Although never been to CH (sailed 'round it tho') 4x4's and beaches and "full access" don't neccessarily go hand in hand.

Perhaps a better option is a licensing/permit program in line with the original deed of gift, that would fund local wildlife preservation and include a do no harm / I am aware of the consequences "of roasting piping plover" clause as part of its application.

If one was to start a petition along those lines I'd sign it.
