Just back from a week in heaven. Travelocity last minute deals made it possible. I found Brian Talma and the guys at de Action shop to be most helpful, and sailing out and surfing back over the reef break a whole new level of awesome. Lots of kiters too, if that's your thing. It's so cool to look down and see your shadow bouncing along over the reef, and to have turtles come up to see you. All you midwesterners tired of snow should grab your bathing suit and go! |

Where did you stay?
Did you travel with a non-windsurfing spouse?
What were the conditions like??
Prices on Travelocity are all over the map. |

We stayed at the Savannah, which is very nice, but expensive and on the west coast. There is a 3 br house on the beach next to de Action shop, which i hear is for rent for 200/day, and it seems very nice. An email to the guys at the shop might get you more info. Silver sands has a windsurf facility right on site. I don't know anything about it, as I keep going back to Brian Talma's place.
My husband and kids don't windsurf, so we spent the first three days diving before I got my chance. Everyone at one time or another has been certified by Haroon at The Dive Shop. It's a great way to learn. No pool time, and you're out by the wrecks on the first day. The caves, Welchman Hall Gulley (which is a beautiful jungle/forest walk near the caves), Bathsheba, on the east coast, with it's big tubing waves are all interesting and non windsurf activities. The driving is English style, so we had a lot of coaching from kids and spouse about how to do that safely.
Accomodations range from simple to very elaborate, and the price reflects that. St Laurence Gap is heavy on night life. The Platinum coast is what you'd expect... high walls, lots of tourists...some of the most amazing resorts in the world. South coast is quieter, and the west coast quieter still. I like to be away from the resorts, which is why I like de Action shop.
The conditions while we were there were a little light. I sailed a 6.2 and was really comfortable planing in and out of the reef break. There sometimes is a strong current, which is something to be careful of. There is a moderate beach break, depending on the day. The beaches are all beautiful, and the locals very nice, especially if you have tips readily available.
Hope this is helpful. |

Hey Snewsom,
Thanks for the great report. Barbados sounds great. My wife and i are considering going in late May or June. Have you been to Crane beach at all? Any thoughts on the location there versus where the Savannah is? My wife doesn't sail, but I'd like to get a few days in. We both dive. Options for eating out would be nice and we aren't into the late night scene much anymore.
Thanks!
Jeremy
