Even if you don't sail Candlestick, help your bros and sisters out -- and send a letter. Very Happy

At the request of Governor Schwarzenegger, California State Parks has created a list of parks that they would close in order to absorb a 10% reduction in their budget and Candlestick Park is on that list.

The parks that are targeted for closure appear to have been selected without consultation at the regional level and real consideration as to how the parks are utilized. An article in the Chronicle reveals that parks were selected based on revenue, ease of closure and, and location (in order to spread the closures around the state):

There are two things that you can do if you are concerned about the proposed closure:

(1.) Contact your elected state representatives (State Senator and Assembly Member) and oppose the plan to close parks in general and let them know why closing a park like Candlestick is a bad idea. Go to the link below to find the contact information for your representatives:

Remember that calls and letters may carry more weight than e-mails. If you call, ask who the appropriate staff member is to address the State parks closure issue.

(2.) To have an impact, write a personal letter to State Parks Director Ruth Coleman to let her know why Candlestick Park is a critical resource for our community.

Director Coleman,

For windsurfing, Candlestick Point State Recreation Area in San Francisco is a unique regional asset. There are a limited number of spots where intermediate windsurfers can safely develop their skills and progress without having to contend with large swells and chop. Many advanced windsurfers also prefer Candlestick's smooth waters to the bumpier conditions at most of the other windsurfing spots in the Bay Area. One reason is that the choppier water can be harder on the body (particularly if you're over 50!)

The unique geography upwind of the windsurfing area at Candlestick Point often brings about a steady wind when many other sites in the SF Bay Area are not windy. When considering traffic on the local freeways, you realize that for many commuters in the Bay Area, only Candlestick is realistically available after work – the other good spots are too far away when you consider the after-work commute. For these citizens, losing Candlestick means losing their favorite healthy environmentally-friendly activity: windsurfing.

Because Candlestick Point extends out into the Bay, it provides an opportunity for windsurfers to make it back to shore even if they are blown downwind. Other nearby sites such as Oyster Point require the windsurfer to sail in offshore winds which are not safe for intermediate sailors.

In addition, Candlestick Park serves a local urban community in southeast San Francisco that is most in need of the benefits that a park offers and has few options in terms of Parks and open space.

For these reasons, please spare Candlestick!

Thank you for your consideration.
