Hi,
So I am considering simplifying and updating my sail quiver. Just ordered 4.7 and 5.5 Northwave ZX-L. Next biggest size right now is 6.2 Windwing Bash, then WW Hammer 6.9, 7.6, 8.4 and WW Formula Race 9.8.
So, am considering switch to either:
North Natural 6.2, Prisma 7.5, 8.5 or North Prisma 6.5, 7.5, 8.5 and could change NW 5.5 to 5.6 or 5.7.
any opinions?
me, 5'8" , high 160's at the moment, boards: Go 170 (use with 9., rrd z-ride 133, rrd freestyle wave 102, and homemade custom 118 liter slalom board. sail in Long Island, NY and make trip or two to Lakes Bay, NJ. working on getting jibes wired.
thanks for any opinions. |

You could go from the 6.2 right up to an 8.0, frankly. I used to go 6.5 to 8.8 no problem.
Where on Long Island do you sail? I sail the east end mostly, year round.

Hey dennis,
I sail Northwave ZX-L's as well. Great sails with tremendous range. I would stick with the 4.7 and 5.5 but would recommend Northwave's 6.2 as well since it would rig on the same mast as the 5.5 and would give you alot of use during the summer months (I'm about the same weight as you and this is my most frequently used sail during the summer in NJ). From there, I agree with the above in that you could jump right up to the 8.0. Just consider what additional masts and booms you need to buy when selecting your sail size.

Michael and Rob,
thank you for your opinions. Michael, I met you at the ABK clinic at Napeague in September. Don't know if you remember. I sail mostly at Heckscher in the summer and West Neck in the fall.
Rob, I was thinking about a 6.2 ZXL but one of the guys I know who has NW's says the larger sizes (over 5.5 or so) are not that good. It seems your experience with them is different. What do you think?
I do have a whole lot of masts and booms in the right sizes for all these sails. However, I am getting a nolimitz skinny 430 with the two ZXL's I have already ordered. so, i can get rid of an sdm powerex 430, never used that I bought a year or so ago.
thanks again.

Dennis,
I bought a 2007 ZX-L (6.2) last winter and could not be happier with it's performance. It rigs perfectly on the Nolimitz 430 skinny. The 6.2 actually has 6 battens so it can offer a lot of low end power on those marginal days yet remains stable and controllable when most others are sailing a 5.7 or smaller. You'll be amazed at how light the ZX-L s are - even with an aluminum boom. I use mine on a 95 liter wave board for those summer sea breeze days to sail off Sandy Hook and have a blast sailing the offshore swells. It's great for waves, swells and flat water speed blasting.

Hi Dennis...I do remember...I met quite a few mid-island sailors at that clinic, which was great.
You don't need a 7 meter sail if you're going to own 8 meters or larger...save your money (and space in your shredmobile!) _________________ Michael

| Yes, I was sailing 6.5 to 8.4 for the past two seasons. I have a 7.1 that was not a quality sail and was never using it. However, I picked up a 6.9 Duke at the end of last season as the 6.5, a cambered Gun, had a panel replaced and was aging. I find overlaping sizes with different styles widens your selection. |
