Upon arriving at Sherman Island County Park Playpen launch about 2pm today to sail (12/20) another windsurfer (Fabi?) was derigging and trying to wash a film of sticky hydrocarbons from the leaking boat off of his gear.

The boat looks to have gotten stuck and is listing on the shallow sand bar point directly next to the reeds and upwind of the beach launch. The ebb was carrying most of the oily stuff downriver when I was there, but prevailing winds were still carrying a little of the oil (or fuel) film towards the beach (had a diesel fume smell to it).

The word I got was that the boat has been there leaking for the past couple weeks and the owner has promised the park hosts to get the boat out, but has not come through yet. Sad

the boat was there 10 days ago but there was no leak. One of the Rangers was taking a look at the boat. I'm surpised nothing has been done yet.

How was the sailing? I don't work tomorrow and it seems like it was blowing around 20 knots today.

I got there too late to get in decent sailing with the gear I brought. The wind really backed off from high teens while I was rigging my 7.7 /115 and I didn't bring anything bigger (Fabi had been out on a 5.7 and was little underpowered).

The story of the sailboat is murkier than the water but I'll throw in what I have seen, smelled and heard. It looks to be about a 25-30' steel-hulled, broad-beamed POS (not point-of-sale.) Apparently, it has a diesel auxiliary and has leaked quite a bit of fuel (Cosco Busan II ?) The owner may have been trying to tow it upriver with a small motorboat when he ran into wind and waves (go figure.) He anchored it for the night and the wind pushed it to the beach where it got stuck in the mud. He put up the sails about a week ago, hoping, I guess, for some help from a south wind. Looks like they have been up ever since, and they are beginning to tear. I suspect he has abandoned it by now.

As for the sailing, I really wasn't in the mood for getting cold, plus I wanted to try my new board, so I waited until the wind died down a little and rigged my 4.6. Blasted off immediately, up the parking lot, thru the gravel and across the grass. Three big, soft tires do the trick! Smile
