"Lesson learned, land wrong and you can break your neck wearing a helmet. "

Are you suggesting the helmet contributed to him breaking his neck?

I'm not suggesting anything, just stating a proven fact.

Yes, a simple fact. He died of a broken neck caused by the helmet that prevented death from a smashed skull.

Helmets are a matter of choice, but if you choose not to wear one in high winds you might want to consider a PFD. I would guess that the biggest danger in windsurfing is still drowning.

Booties/no booties? I'm too lazy to redeck my boards so I wear booties. Also, the footstraps rub the top of my feet raw if I don't wear them. Ninja toes seem the best for me because I can feel my way around the board better than with standard booties.

Coachg, I wasn't there that day but do remember vividly LD's account of the event. At the time he surmised it was impact with the water rather than with equipment. BTW, Stretch is alive and still shaping boards in Santa Cruz.

While surfing a 4ft day at County Line last August a wave I was riding broke in front of me causing my board to rail up and as I was falling I caught the rail to the side of my head. My head was spinning and I was fighting to get on my board before blacking out. I figured the board would carry me in and hopefully someone would haul my sorry ass up on the beach. Fortunately I did not black out but only perforated my ear drum, which is what caused the verdigo. I thought seriously about a helmet after that but my vanity won't let me. Besides, in 40 years of surfing that is the worst accident I have ever had.

During that time my father in law had been in the hospital slowly dying of renal failure and in fact died 2 days after the mishap. To me, drowing while surfing would be a far better way to go. If I had have been knocked out I never would have known what hit me. One moment I was experiencing the shear joy of riding a wave and the next..lights out without having to think about it.
