So have you ever sailed in the Gorge before? That will change our recommendations a lot. If you haven't I say " keep it simple " on the gear. Demo as much as you can. Then buy. August and September can be good for wind here, but May June,and July are best. However this year September was great!

Oh,and get ready to move here,once you get some good days here you may get hooked.

Like jimoak said - there is a ton of high-quality used gear available in Hood River - especially towards the end of the season. If you really want to travel light, leave your old gear at home and buy gear when you get here. Its always a good idea to demo first - especially for boards. Also, you can rent gear from BigWinds or Isthmus - and they will apply some amount of rental towards purchase. They typically put their demo fleets up for sale after Labor Day.

If you are really set on just bringing 2 sails, at your weight I'd brind a 4.2 and a 4.7 for sailing much of the time, but you'll be the most unhappy guy on the beach when it's really blowing. Sure, you'll sail a lot on the 4.2 and 4.7 but you'll miss the best days. There's probably worse things, but I cant think of them right at the moment.
