I've camped through a couple Santa Anas at San Carlos. The problem is that the wind comes from the generally leeward side of your rig and everything blows over the cliff and into the ocean. Not to mention the dust and the gusts that will take the paint off your vehicle.
I have fond memories of running around at 4 am in my underwear, desperately trying to save my gear by stuffing it under my van. I spent the rest of that morning holed up in my van, rocking back and forth in the gusts.
Amazingly though, in the afternoon, the wind blew out of the west. I pulled my gear out from under the van and, sleepily, rode a few waves.

when was this picture taken? did the santa ana conditions that we had last week in CA extend down to San Carlos? I guess the winds were offshore here in SF, and Santa Ana in SoCal, so another few hundred miles wouldn't be out of the question.

This was the the previous weekend when we had strong Santa Ana winds and fires here in SoCal.
A Santa Ana event in SoCal means a "El Norte" event in Baja. San Felipe and the gulf 'goes off' and is great sailing.
But in San Carlos El Norte blows straight offshore as in the photo. The local geography intensifies the El Norte. Hence the genuine, measured 90mph.

You probably should go down there this Thursday morning to see whether they're still blowing.
