I will be on Molokai in December and have been having trouble finding gear to rent, along with much info as to where to sail. Does anyone have any advice?
Thanks

I doubt you'll find alot of wind on Molokai in December.
Maui gets the most wind of the islands because of a venturi effect, but even there, it is hit or miss in Dec, probably only 40% days are sailable and you can see a week or more of no wind. I would guess the odds are less on Molokai.
There are many other things to do on the islands, so enjoy your vacation. I haven't heard of any rentals there. Maybe fly over to Maui if wind is in the forcast.

Hey Carl,

Maui can blow 25+ days even in December some years, although most years it's quite spotty by then. There is a venturi effect between Maui and Molokai as well, that pumps the wind up to epic proportions. You may want to read some of the reports on the Maui to Molokai crossings (one of them is here). I read this article a few years ago and I don't remember much except that 4.7 was a poor choice. Smile

There is also a ferry between Molokai and Lahaina.

Cheers,
Gabor

Hi Gabor,
Thanks for the info about the venturi effect betw Maui and Molokai. That's probably why the NWS has usually a higher forcast for that channel.
I would presume there's some launch site with wind on Molokai since they sail to it?

Going by my 10 years of sailing Maui around Christmas/Newyears,,,
last year was by far the best, 8 days straight out of 12 days there (and 6.0 and better to boot).
Usually I'm only gettin about 4-6 out of 12. That's plane-able days with
sails up to 8.0 (south winds or trades, Kihei or Kanaha, whchever is blowing).
It's sure better (and warmer) than the bay area in December!!
