Will be in Hatteras for first three weeks of September and want to rent a house on the sound. We'll be sailing on the sound as my wife is just learning to get into the harness and straps.

What are the best areas for good winds in the fall? We're looking at Island Creek in Avon but I've heard that Frisco is better than Avon in the fall. What about Rodanthe/Waves area.

The Rodanthe / Waves area is the best all year for soundside sailing, IMHO. I hope you have a good trip.

I've stayed at Island Creek, and Frisco (Brigands Bay). On the water there really is little difference (SW on warmer days leaves you in a wind shadow the first 100 yards on Frisco soundfront unless you're on the Brigands Bay peninsula). Basically boils down to if you like to sail around less people (Frisco), or be part of the sailscape on the water (Avon)

Leon.

Rodanthe/ Waves gets blown out on a strong NE. Not that your wife would be sailing in 4.5 conditions but you might get stranded. Island Creek in Avon OTOH keeps enough water even after a couple of NE/3.5 days which is not unusual in the fall. You can walk a mile out in Waves when that happens. Island Creek is also good on a dead-on W while you're struggling to get upwind elsewhere (including Canadian Hole). Basically all directions work there except for SE which is very rare anyways. Avon also has infrastructure; WS shops, Food Lion, breakfast places etc. which are not available further North. Not sure who told you about Frisco. It's just around the corner from Avon; same conditions except that SW is offshore which kinda sucks because it needs to be real strong there to keep the mosquitos grounded. I would go for Avon without question.
