Will be in Hatteras for first three weeks of September and want to rent a house on the sound. We'll be sailing on the sound as my wife is just learning to get into the harness and straps.
What are the best areas for good winds in the fall? We're looking at Island Creek in Avon but I've heard that Frisco is better than Avon in the fall. What about Rodanthe/Waves area. |

Sept will predominantly be our typical SW or NE wind direction, therefore, Rodanthe/Waves is great as well as Avon. I would recommend either of these two locations. Though, for sound side sailing, pretty much anywhere from Jockey's Ridge...south is good. Though, to be near the shops and "scene," I would recommend Avon since it is central to it all.

i'm partial to port avon, little sub-community on south end of town. there are 8-10 large sound front houses, all pretty nice and several across the street but with sound access, and significantly cheaper. a little quieter there. depends on your preference. we always go there mid october.
hope you have a good week.

Avon over Waves/Rondanthe/Salvo. They got several shops. Not as shallow so you can sail on a strong NE when the water gets blown out up in Waves. Breakfast places and a grocery store in town. If you can get a house at Island Creek (Down the side street from WH Hatteras) you're good for any direction other than SE (which hardly ever happens anyway)
Just noticed... my avitar is shot right from one of the Island Creek houses from a couple of years ago. That was on a strong W |
