I'm thinking of coming down from the North Tahoe area for some late summer sailing and have seen a fair bit of discussion recently on the forum re:the Berkeley, Pt. Isabel, and Emeryville sailing sites. I have never sailed any of those and would appreciate any input on how to figure out where to go. I haven't gotten to sail much recently and at 6'/185 lbs. will be happy with fairly flat water 6.0-type conditions, at least for starters. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

I used to sail Berkeley and Pt. Isabel. The interesting thing is one can be blowing 20 while the other is just about dead, and they are just a few miles apart. Can you say microclimates? Also, in late summer the wind can shut off pretty quickly. If you feel the wind getting lighter, get to shore asap if you don't want to swim. Personally, I like Sherman Island better. In August the wind tends to be in the 17-22 mph range (this year might be different,) and it doesn't tend to shut off so abruptly. If you want flatter water, try to sail closer to slack tide. |

Sometimes the wind at the end of Sherman Island can be good at that time of year for the conditions you speak of. |

I suggest that you find out the safe entry/exit points at whatever sailing venue you select because there are numerous rocky edges that make it difficult and if you can't return to where you entered, you need to know what other safe choices you have. There are public bathrooms at Berkeley (map search/satelite view of the foot of University Ave. or Powell St.) and Point Isabel (map search/satelite view of the foot of Central Ave.), but they are a short walk and you should ask where they are. No camping is allowed. At Sherman Island, the access is a county park that requires payment. The Rio Vista Windsurfing Association has a couple of free parking lots before you get to the park that are very convenient (with portapotties). You can camp at one of them, but not at the other. You can get a partial view of the sailing areas at these websites: (search for RVWA and Berkeleycam).

What about Marina Bay? Nice launch spot, flatter water than Berkeley. I found this to be nice break from the big rollers at Berkeley, as I am just starting out on a bigger board (120L) and still learning the footstraps. Hard to get confident in those straps when you are about to fly off a ramp. But see dcrabe's microclimate warnings. Larkspur can also be a nice spot with flatter water, but wind can be inconsistent. Flat water is a relative term around here. |

It's not East Bay, but Candlestick and Palo Alto are practically pancake flat. You can get some big winds at the Stick, and Palo Alto will deliver the 6.0 five days a week. Might be a little farther than you want to drive, but if you're socked in the fog in Bezerkley, these places might be windy.

Marina Bay is a nice alternate launch for Pt. Isabel. Rig on real grass, steps to water. Watch tides, as the mud is nasty. |
