I was present at mosier that morning/day. A sailors gear was seen floating off the launch site. No sailor was seen with it. The gear was brought into the beach. and Several people started sailing up wind to find the person adrift. 1st "bystander" responders on scene were a nurse and a retired medic.

Nelsonís death
ruled an accident

By SUE RYAN

Hood River Police have ruled Janet Nelsonís death an accident.

The Hood River woman died last week while windsurfing in the Columbia River near Mosier. Detective Anthony Frasier said the cause of death was ruled accidental due to blunt trauma force to the head.

ďIt was not a rock; there is no evidence of that. Itís possible she got her head caught between the board and mast,Ē Frasier said.

He said they donít know exactly how the accident happened since there were no witnesses but that it was ďmechanicalĒ in nature.

Frasier said drowning was ruled out as a cause after Nelsonís family ordered a private autopsy. Since the accident occurred in Wasco County, their medical examiner Peter Peruzzo did the autopsy. Hood River investigated the death since Nelson was pronounced dead at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital.

For those of you who give your friends a bad time about wearing a helmet and floatation, remember what "could" happen, an accident, and the loss or injury of a friend. "I will remember the now windsurfing spirit that sails over my shoulder"
