Hi guys, I am Blond_wind from Italy in Europe. I will spend next holiday in Belize in August. I check wind condition on windfinder.com and others website but on August it seem to me that wind won’t be enough. Anyone have been evere there? Can you give me some notice about this spot?Excuse me for my bad american language |

I've sailed at this location:
http://www.sailsportsbelize.com/
I had to take a short flight from Belize City to Ambergris Caye but it was inexpensive... I think the RT flight was $50us. I don't know about wind... I happened to be in Belize City on a windy day. Ambergris Caye is a great place to visit irregardless of wind.

Sailed at the same place last Decmber. Side-onshore conditions, 12-16mph steady. Not much planing, but the water in between the reef and the beach is amazing. At one point I dropped the sail to use it as a magnifying glass. Watch out for rays getting into the water.
Their fleet is not very big, but rather modern and would appeal to most intermediate sailors. Biggest sail they had was 7.8m Aerotech, if you take it, expect to see lower pannel repair
Chris, the owner, is a very cool guy. You can email him, I'm sure he'll give you first hand account of wind conditions. During my week stay I found windguru.com forecast to be pretty accurate for that spot.

Couldn't agree more. Plethora of other water-centric activities. |

I was there in late November. Quite a bit of rain and some storm winds. The area gets sudden squalls that one can see moving quickly across the water. When they hit, winds can jump from 15 to 30 knots in seconds, so it can be a wild ride.

August and September are peak hurricane season in that part of the world. Unless there is a tropical system close enough to generate wind there will not be much wind for you on your trip. However, if you find yourself without wind, the diving and snorkeling are world class. |

I was in Belize last April. took gear, hoped to kite, but didn't. There is some kiteboarding on Cay Caulker and also down south at Placencia. One major problem Belize has is that there are hardly any beaches wide enough to safely rig and launch...too many obstacles like palm trees in most spots or the beach is only a few meters wide. I think the other posters comments re: time of year and wind are valid. |

San Pedro is the town on Ambergris Caye. Pronounce that " key"- it means island. Chris is indeed a very good guy and has good gear rigged on the beach. You will like doing business with him.
The next island nearby is Caye Caulker where there is a thermal effect that adds 8 kilometers of wind speed before 10 AM and after 4PM that is not available on Ambergris.
There is all four kinds of sailing at the Caye Caulker site.
- In front of the island is a protected area of clear water inside the reef about a mile wide and 20 miles long, bump and jump style.
-Just inside the reef the water is flat in all winds for speed blasting five mile runs
-The Swash is a two mile long onshore wave site with overhead break most days of the year. The other wave breaks are more advanced and you would need a local along.
-There are five other islands near enough to visit on your board, including Ambergris.
My wife and I sail on 74 liter F2 Style boards as our main ride and a 90 liter for a big board that gets little use. My main sail is a 5.8 HOT Smack and hers is 5.0 Naish boxer. We sail about half the days of the year.
Because of better winds and conditions, this is where all the windsurfers in Belize prefer to live. Chris can't join us because Ambergris is the big tourist spot in Belize and there is much more business over there. As a result, he is open all the time. It is a much more touristy place than elsewhere in Belize. Caye Caulker is the island for travellers who don't like heavy tourism but is regarded as boring by those who prefer San Pedro. Life is cheaper by half on CC with modest small hotels.. There is a twenty minute water taxi for US$8 between the islands.
The owner of the rental on Caye Caulker died in a kite accident two years ago. His lady Diane only opens when she wants to so you would have to write her to arrange gear in advance. All nice Naish sails -no boards under 80 liters.
Water is very warm in the summer and sea is full of life. You see dolphins and eagle rays, and somtimes schools of fish jump in front of the board.
As mentioned Aug is variable winds and sudden 5 minute squalls which are a blast. In Aug you will find few other sailors except French and Italian visitors. Some local sailors are in the Gorge and others in Maui with me right now until Nov. after hurricane season. |
