I inadvertedly attracted the attention of SFO airport security by getting too close to the big fuel tanks on the far side of the little bay at Haskins. I saw several police cars and fire trucks but had no idea they wanted to talk to me. Eventually a police officer caught my attention by walking down to the launch area and waving me in. I was told that I can't sail withing 200 yards of those tanks, but he agreed that it was impossible to know where the 200 yard line is because there are no signs and no bouyes to mark the restricted area. I will probably think twice before sailing at Haskins again.

maps.google.com

The 200 yard restriction covers about 25% of the reach from the launch over to the fuel tanks.

Do not know if it is 200 yard radius from the tanks or 200 from the airport property but here is a map
Thanks Google

Many years ago, around 1989 or so, a bunch of us launched from Oyster Point. Big Joe (6'8") a really big guy was with us and disappeared. We were back at the launch site about to call the Coast Guard when a Checkers taxi shows up and lo and behold Joe gets out in his wetsuit with all his sailing gear in the taxi! He told us he broke down near the SF International Airport runway and got to shore and stood up on the edge of the runway. You can imagine the security dudes when a 6'8" red haired Viking looking guy all of a sudden is on the edge of the runway with his sailboard. They immediately sent out a team to pick him up, and after realizing he was just an unlucky sailor (he's had his share of mishaps) they called a cab and loaded him up for the trip back to Oyster Pt. while we all had a good laugh at his plight. Nonetheless we still sailed there on occasion, stayed our distance from shore and never had a problem.

You should probably think more than twice about sailing 'Haskins'. I sailed that place 20 years ago when it was known as 'Flying Tigers'. You could launch from the access road to the north of the fuel dump. And dump it is. Many a day I'd smell jet fuel in the water out there, and there used to be a paint plant on the north point. That place is a sewer. If you have to sail flat water, go to Candlestick, you'll live longer.
